I think Microsoft will be losing a lot of money of they cancel those mentioned services from Yahoo. Many people were using Yahoo because they liked those Yahoo services and products not only becasue of the brand>

A better stradegy would be to let Yahoo continue doing business as usual and Micrsoft compete against Yahoo and see who wins like an internal competion. At the end of the day, the profits are going to Microsoft's bank account anyway.

@Barry - LOL.

I spent a year in online corporate comms at Investis Ltd. After a while the earnings reports become second nature, though they do still make me wanna stick a fork in my eye. I did have a lot of sympathy for our coders who had to HTML these babies, sometimes in just 24 hours.

Yahoo content touches everyone and I don't think their reach and PI will be going down much if at all in the next couple of years and that is the main driver of search engagement. I'm pretty sure that outside of the US, people don't go to yahoo to search. They go to yahoo to check their mail, their shareprice etc and they might just do a web search whilst there.

If they manage to successfully deploy the plans to innovate with blended content in the SERP (which they are at liberty to do under the terms of this deal) then I can't see why they would lose any tangible market share.

@Lisa, why thank you! Actually it didn't take such a huge amount of time as a lot of these events unfurled whilst I was in-situ. ;-)

Brilliant blogpost and analysis Nichola, you've spent some serious time putting this together. Brilliant, will be using as a "point to" blogpost when someone asks about the Yahoo/Bing merge. You rock!

Ugh, those numbers make my head explode. Seriously, a great analysis Nichola. It does look like this was a great deal for Yahoo, maximising their profits while dramatically lowering their operating cost. The key issue seems to be whether they can hold on to their traffic share once their search is powered by Bing. Will users stick with Yahoo as their portal of choice?
