The Top 30 WordPress Plugins

There is no denying it, where ten years ago a “CMS” was still relatively new for some, now WordPress is becoming the standard for CMS-es. You can even hardly call it a CMS anymore. It’s a platform. And it’s open source. Which makes there are many, many plugins being written for it every day. And people are using them. Jeff Bullas decided to create an overview of the thirty most downloaded WordPress plugins. Top downloaded one is an SEO plugin, All in One SEO Pack. Yoast’s SEO plugin is on spot 13. (more…)

6 Top WordPress Backup Plugin Recommendations

Holy Data Loss Batman

Keeping your own website or blog takes time and effort but what happens if you lose even part of your information? Having to re-do content or scrape the Wayback Machine for indexed page records is time consuming and sketchy. Even after that there is no guarantee that you can retrieve all files.

Having recently experienced perils of cheap hosting on WordPress affiliate sites (cobbler’s children worst shod and all that),  I found out the hard way that not practicing what you preach to clients with regards to backing up database files can result in a lot of extra work and effort and of course lost income!

Even hardcore professionals suffer from procrastination when it comes to boring tasks like backups so I thought that I would share my plugin findings in the hope that it saves you data, time and prevents you from ever having to re-make anything ever again - [*disclaimer* - in theory]

Video SEO for WordPress Just Became Really Easy

video-seo-featured-2

Here on State of Search we have been using WordPress from the start and we have also from the start been using a few of Joost de Valk’s plugins, including his most famous one, the WordPress SEO plugin. Until now all these plugins were free to use. Recently Joost (who for some is better known under the name “Yoast“), launched his first paid plugin: Video SEO for WordPress.

I was fortunate enough to be able to test in the past few weeks in which as it turned out it had some extra use on an unexpected successful post on State of Search. Find below my review of the plugin. (more…)

WordPress: A Global Phenomenon

WordPress-Stats-Infographic-intro

State of Search runs on WordPress. As do 72.4 million other websites. That is 53.8% of all sites using a content management system. These are quite impressive numbers. But there are a few more impressive stats when it comes to WordPress.

Joost de Valk (Yoast) decided to make a plugin out of the statistics he could collect about the tool on which he has made several very successful plugins. That infographic results in a very impressive list of facts about this CMS, truly a phenomenon: WordPress FTW! (more…)

Be Careful Choosing WordPress Plugins: They Could Kill Your Rankings

buggy-plugins-install

There are many many website owners out there who use WordPress. And rightfully so, it is a great platform. One of the things I personally like, as a non-developer, is that it is open source and others built stuff for me. Usually that means you just grab a plugin which looks cool and does something you always wanted your site to have or do. But in some cases that might not be such a good idea. Because plugins can cause troubles too.

I’ve had plugins instantly take down my sites or slowed them down very much, but it can go a lot further. A Google Webmasterforum thread shows that a plugin could potentially take your site out of Google. A Facebook Like Plugin did that to a site from a forum poster. (more…)

How to Share on Google+ from any website

G+-buttons-white-on-red

This is a guest post from Alex Moss. He is Co-Founder and Technical Director at 3 Door Digital, and develops WordPress plugins. He found a way to share to Google+ from an external site, similar to the tweet button, and wanted to share it with SoS readers. The post has been updated after the launch of Alex’ plugin.

The Problem

Since Google+ launched, I have been asked a few times about whether there is some WordPress plugin or code to allow people to share a URL to Google+ from outside Google+ itself, in the same way a tweet, like or +1 button behaves. In short, there wasn’t one. I don’t understand why, because as an SEO I’d want to make sure this was available immediately or at least used the +1 button somehow to add functionality to share the +1′d URL within Google+ for all/your circles to see. There is one now however!

update-alert-2

If you own a WordPress website and you haven’t updated your WordPress version lately you might be getting a warning soon. And no, this is not the warning you get when you open the WordPress CMS, it is a warning from Google.

Last week the first people started noticing that Google had sent them a message within Google Webmaster Tools saying they should update their WordPress versions. I myself today got an e-mail from GWT saying one of my sites needs an update. (more…)
