Via Panda, Penguin and other subtler algo updates, Google are hammering home the message that content is everything when it comes to judging the worth of a site and how often they are prepared to return it in the search results for its target keywords.
Savvy marketers have been using a variety of methods for years to attract visitors, both on and off page but the latest report from ContentWise and the Custom Content Council shows that it is video content that is proving to be an invaluable addition to their branded marketing repertoire. (more…)
Taking your kids to work is something special. Taking your kids to your work if your work is Google is something else.
Everybody knows the ‘reputation’ of the Google Plex. Working there is a treat. Whether or not that has become better or worse over the last decade is a different discussion, but back in 1999 it sure looked like a treat.
In this video an ex-Googler has taken his kids, back in 1999, to his work, which then was Google. He just started working there and took his kids to the office when nobody was there. It definitely is ‘just’ a home video, but it does give a little bit of insight into the ‘fun part’ of working for Google back in 1999.
Too bad the video is not embeddable on the site but we didn’t want to withhold it from you. Watch it here.
During March, we did a sponsored post about a competition by Hazelnut Films, which aimed to connect SEOs on opposite sides of the world. The two entrants with the connection spanning the greatest distance would win a customised copy of SEO explained in 90 seconds. The competition finished earlier this week – here’s what happened… (more…)

Google uses many signals in ranking. Sometimes the rankingfactor “trust” is mentioned. But what is meant by that? Matt Cutts decided to explain. There is no ‘trustrank’, but they are looking at how believable the reputation of a page is. Google uses a lot of different words for that.
Google has released a video following up on their video about improvements to search. They now look at the “evolution of search”. To be honest, its much more about the Evolution of Google than the evolution of search, but its still a very interesting video to watch.
Google has always been struggling to find out where content has originally been written. In his latest of his famous Webmastervideos Matt Cutts now explains some of the signals Google uses to figure that out. There is a part which you can help Google on yourself, for example by ‘pinging’ the search engines, but Google also looks at some ‘simpler’ elements. Like Pagerank: a higher Pagerank often indicates the source lies there.
Then off course there is rel-canonical which is a huge indicator, but other elements like rel=author also play a big role. Cutts ends with explaining that there are a lot of signals, but that ‘even’ Google messes up sometimes.

There is no limit to Google+. The number of users is growing rapidly, updates are now spreading more quickly and finally we have business pages, so now business pages are popping up rapidly. Everything is big when it comes to Google+, even the discussion whether or not it will succeed. Opinions differ, but in general you can say that the expectations are that Google+ will succeed, even if you aren’t using it now. After all, sooner or later you are going to end up using it… right…?
Google is re-designing Gmail. I think many of you might even already have the new design working because you opted in for the beta-version. I know I do. It looks really nice and works pretty nice also.
The redesign however is just part of what Google is planning to do with Gmail. They are adding some features which are not even in the beta version which is currently available.
Last week Google accidentally put a video online introducing the new Gmail. That wasn’t supposed to happen. If look for to the video now you won’t find it. Copies were taken offline on YouTube. Users who had a copy on YouTube were seen as copyright violators. (more…)
