Google Algo Update Improves Diversity of Results

update-available

For a while we have been seeing domination in certain SERPS from a single domain. Searchengineland wrote about this problem last month. In their example a single domain was dominating the SERP for “christopher jagmin plates”. It had been bugging me because a single domain can’t the 10 most relevant results for a single query in my mind.

On Friday Matt Cutts tweeted that there was a small algo change last week that will improve the diversity of search results in terms of different domains returned. This seems to have fixed the US SERPS but is it yet to roll out to the UK from what I can see thus far.

Google’s Panda Update Rolls Out World Wide

panda in the wild

With a small blogpost Amit Singhal has announced that the much discussed Panda Update is now being rolled out World Wide, with the exception of the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages.

The Panda Update stirred up the SEO World quite a bit when it rolled out originally in the US in February and after that in other English-speaking countries. Did Google’s algorithm change misfire? Mahalo fires 10% of staff

Many sites in the US were ‘hit’ by this update. It was supposedly cleaning up the SERPS, but it seems as if Google has been cleaning up a little bit too much in some cases. An article in Wired shows that there are many sites which feel that they deliver quality content did get hit by Google big time, maybe even unfairly. (more…)

Google letting you check available rooms in Maps?

checkin-checkout-1

It seems as if Google is making some more changes to Google Maps at the moment. Either that or I haven’t been paying attention lately ;) .

I noticed two different things in the past two days. First I noticed Android continuing my Google Maps query where I left it at my computer and then this morning I noticed the checkin / check out options on Google Maps.

This morning I was looking on Google Maps for the Parking I had to go to for my meeting a bit later on. I then noticed that on top of the results there was the possibility to fill in check in and check out dates. Not for the Parking off course, but for the hotels nearby to the Parking. A quick check on Twitter and with some friends learned me they hadn’t seen it before either. So it might be something new, or we have looked over it.
