iOS Still Dominates Mobile And Tablet Traffic In UK

internet uk tablet

According to Adobe, 84% of UK traffic via a tablet device went to iOS in February 2013, with 53.5% of UK traffic via mobile phones doing the same.

Tablet and Smartphone internet traffic may favour Android in other countries, but in the UK, Apple still lead the way. According to Adobe, 84% of UK traffic via a tablet device went to iOS in February 2013, with 53.5% of UK traffic via mobile phones doing the same. Of the six countries analysed, Adobe confirmed – unsurprisingly – that iOS and Android completely dominated the market share.

More than 90% of smartphone owners used these operating systems, with iOS the leader in the UK, the US and in France. Blackberry users on the RIM OS accounted for 1.4% of tablet internet traffic in the UK and 4.1 of smartphone traffic – the highest figures recorded out of the countries selected. UK’s Most Expensive AdWords Keywords

Last year we reported on the most expensive keywords in the US. Now Hallam Internet comes with numbers specifically for the UK. ”Online Live Roulette” (worth £75.02) and “TAC Compensation” (£70.19) are the ‘big ones’ and Claims and Compensations is the most expensive category (above gambling!). Look for yourself. (more…)

Bing Testing New Design in the UK

We sometimes catch Google tests in the wild, even though most of the State of Search bloggers are based in Europe. That is because Google tends to test broader than just the US (even though US does get the most attention from Google).

With Bing its different, since they focus mainly on the US, maybe because of the market share. So when they do test here its news. Maybe not big news, but still news.

It now seems as if Bing is testing the new designs, which they have been testing in the US already, in the UK. According to Webpronews a version is being tested which has a new homepage design and in which the search results are cleaner. (more…)

The Fallacy of the “Don’t Rely on Google” Argument

Google Owns You

Every time Google decides to deliver another collective bitch-slap to the SEO industry in the form of an update named after a cute monochrome animal, we see the usual eruptions of debate and arguments among SEOs about the hows and whys of it all.

One argument that is consistently put forth, usually by smug SEOs whose sites have escaped the sledgehammer of Google’s wrath unscathed, is that “no site should be too reliant on Google’s traffic”.

That particular argument grinds my gears to no end. It really does. In my opinion it’s just not a valid argument. (more…)

Looking At UK SEO Agencies: Or Should We Say “Digital Marketing Agency”?

SEO-Agency-101-intro

When it comes to SEO industries one of the leading countries without a doubt is the UK. There are many high level agencies in the UK and the developments are going very rapidly there.

Whether or not the UK industry is much better or worse than other countries is hard to say, not just because it is difficult to look at specific agencies, but also because the environment can be different in each country.

Still, you can try and look to the UK by looking at the numbers. Numbers that show that the UK SEO industry is not just focussing on SEO anymore, but also heavily involved in Social Media and Web Analytics for example. Or that most agencies have a blog. And that the good old fashioned “SEO Agency” seems to be replaced, as a name that is, by “Digital Marketing Agency”. This infographic sums it up. (more…)

Tweets can, may and will be used against you by the press

twitter-tweet

We all know that what we put on the web ‘never goes away’. At least, not for a while. So what we put on Social Media is something which we should think about. Don’t just throw party pics on there if you are right in the middle of getting that perfect job. Think about whether or not you really want to be calling someone names on the web. We all know that. Right? Wrong…

Unfortunately one of the issues with Social Media is that many think that what they put on the web is theirs and theirs only. They couldn’t be more wrong. Social Media allows others to take that public content and run with it.

For those who didn’t realize that it has now been made official by the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) in the UK. They responded to complaints about articles published in the Daily Mail and the Independent in which Tweets were placed from Sarah Baskerville, an official from the Department of Transport. She had tweeted to her followers about having a hang over while at work. (more…)

UK OFT Judgement Could Have Impact On Linkbuilding

In an interesting development that could have wide-ranging repercussions for UK linkbuilders, the UK’s Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has taken action against a company (Handpicked Media) that paid bloggers to write promotional blog posts, comments, and tweets.

While writing promotional material is not misleading in and of itself, what the OFT did have a problem with was that these posts/comments/tweets did not include a statement that they were paid for. The OFT concluded that this was misleading and against the Consumer Protection Act.

UK about to turn the web upside down? Privacy Bill might do so

The UK is an island, and they say islands are different. In many cases the UK is different from the rest of Europe. They drive on the left for instance. And they are still using the Pound and not the Euro. We can live with that, because we love the Brits. We would even consider moving to the UK because they are a bit ahead of us when it comes to Internet development.

But now the UK government seems to have driven on the left side a bit too much, they must be seeing things the wrong way. Yesterday a Bill passed the House of Lords which will change the UK Internet for ever if it also passes the House of Commons: the “Piracy Bill”, part of the Digital Economy Bill. The passing of the House of Lords however is the most important step. If the Bill makes it many in the UK might just lose their internet access or see their website taken down. (more…)

SEO: Where to Next?

So where is SEO going? Like lifes many mysteries, similar to “Why are we here?” and “If a tree fell in a forest would it make a sound?”. There is no clear defined answer which is why SES kindly put together a panel of experts within the online environment to discuss…

It is always nice to be in an open session, I feel it allows the speakers more freedom to say what they want on a variety of aspects of search. More importantly it lets us hear them talk with their guard down; this hope of a slip up was mainly aimed at the Google employee, Maile Ohye.
