Facebook now second-most popular in UK

facebook-europe

UKOM/Nielsen reports that for the first time ever Facebook surpassed Microsoft to become the second-most popular website in the UK. They grew 7 percent compared to a year earlier to 26.8 million visitors in Britain in May.

With that Microsoft falls back to the number three spot. MSN/WindowsLive/Bing sites combined were still good for 26.2 million visits from Brits. Google is still leading the dance with 33.9 million. Nielsen came to these numbers by looking at their panel of 50.000 people. (more…)

Is Live Tweeting & Blogging Ruining Search Marketing Conferences?

tweet-wall

First up I need declare a bunch of caveats, I’ve spoken at loads of search marketing events, I arrange one and have attended absolutely loads of them. So take my following opinion and bias with a pinch of salt…but I’m really starting to wonder whether live blogging and particularly live tweeting is making the digital marketing conference a worse experience.

People not at the conference may really appreciate the play by play coverage but I think the whole phenomenon isn’t helping anyone, especially those who have paid—in many cases—hundreds of pounds to attend. (more…)

Google giving more shape to social person search: last twitter updates

new-tweet

It’s the most done search on the web: the ego search. People looking for their own name. But also many people look for other peoples names, like the ones they are going to meet for the first time, either in a meeting or on a date for example.

I’ve stated before that it would be interesting to actually get a page which you can monitor yourself that would show up in the Google results for your own page and with the new and updated Google Profiles Google seems to have done just that. And Google is now taking another step.

The Google Profiles are showing up more and more in the SERPS and it seems that Google has made a change to how they show Twitter results when you search for a name. (more…)

5 ways for a Local Businesses to grow their Twitter Followers and Business

twitter-work

Similar to Twitter’s little blue bird, time flies. It was this time a year ago that I wrote my most successful post on State of Search – 10 ways to grow your twitter followers and 10 essential tools to do it I must admit, I was surprised at how well it was received, to this date it has received 39 comments, over 400 re-tweets, 20,000 page views and nearly 13,000 visitors via search engines.

Today I want to revisit the Twittersphere but look specifically at how small local businesses can utilise Twitter to grow their followers, but most importantly their business. One thing I have noticed about Twitter is that some people are too caught up in the numbers game and try to artificially increase their followers.  Local businesses really benefit from interacting, engaging and developing relationships with users who are local, so quick fixes such the search queries below won’t help much. More Social Elements in Google Search: Twitter not Facebook is the direction

Google-social

Google is taking it step by step, a very different way than we are used to in this digital era, but slowly but surely Google’s social face is becoming more visible. The latest additions to the Google search results are yet again another signal of Google’s social efforts.

Googles Social Search has been around for a while now (since 2009) but is only showing a small amount of social elements. Social results coming from tools like Twitter for example, were until now not a very big part of the search result. Google now has started to mix social results, from for example Twitter or blogs, with other results. (more…)
