Raven pull their Rank Checking feature: a Reaction from other SEO tools

Raven-pulling-string

Raven, one of the most popular SEO tools and digital marketing platforms used by search marketing agencies and in house teams; last week they announced their decision to close the rank checking element of their platform motivated partially by pressure applied by Google, who aren’t keen on the scraping of their results for rank checking.

If you’ve not come across the story before I recommend reading this thoughtful piece on the decision written by their CEO Patrick. Which I think is a glowing example of how to handle a difficult decision like this.

However while many have admired how Raven have handled the changes it’s inevitably lead to a scramble of their customers exploring other options for rank checking.

I thought it would be interesting to reach out to some other players in the space to get their take on where they see rank checking going in the future. (more…)

Top CRO Tools for Improving Site Performance

Conversion Conference London Logo 2012

The final session of the Conversion Conference didn’t show any signs of wanting to slow down the awesome amount of insights that were delivered by such a great line up of speakers at Conversion Conference 2012. The final session, entitled ‘Top 5 CRO Tools for Improving Site Performance’ brought a very simple task to Craig Sullivan and Rob Jackson; two of the biggest usability and CRO heavyweights in the industry, they simply had to name their favourite tools for improving site performance.

The talk title was somewhat misleading, because far more than 5 tools were mentioned, in fact an enormous 47 of the best CRO and usability testing tools were recommended by both Rob and Craig! Read on below to see how these tools can help you and check out the links to all of these recommended top tools…

Enterprise scale API for Social Crawlytics

social-crawlytics-api

Identifying your competitor’s most shared content has just got a whole lot easier…

Further to our recent post on new features in Social Crawlytics,  Yousaf Sekander at www.rocketmill.co.uk tells us they have recently finished working on an enterprise scale API. This means means that now anyone can use the Social Crawlytics API to pull social stats into their applications/dashboards and use all the features of Social Crawlytics through the API.

Loved by many including Mike King at iAcquire (AKA @ipullrank) who had this to say:

“SocialCrawlytics is an invaluable tool that fills a need for all digital marketers and the launch of API makes it that much easier to integrate it into everything we’re doing at iAcquire and in my own personal work. I encourage everyone to jump on it!” – Mike King - Director of Inbound Marketing at iAcquire

How To Find The Influential Authors: Linkdex Made it Easy

author-ego

With search marketing and social marketing changing from being a channel to send out your message through to channels that help you let others do the talking for you authors are playing a bigger role every day. And I am not talking about authors who write books, but those who write about specific niches, in some cases you could call them bloggers ;-) .

With this change it is also becoming more important to get a grip on these and trying to get a hold of them. Some might call that good old fashioned PR. Finding specific bloggers in your niche can be hard, I’ve written about that before. But help is on the way. Linkdex developed a feature which will make the life of those trying to find and get in touch with these authors much easier. A feature also which got a special commendation at the UK Searchawards last week. And the lucky blogger I am, I had the opportunity to test it out for a period of time. (more…)

Majestic SEO Adds Bulk Backlinks Tool with GWT

majestic-seo

In good old fashioned SEO, which still is very important (and far from dead), there is much to gain in analysing your back links. Especially with updates like Google Penguin back links to your site can not only make your rankings, but also break them.

Google has different tools which can help you get under way in analysing your own back links and even potentially cleaning them (in which the Disavow tool comes in handy). In Google Webmastertools for example Google also presents you with a number of back links to your site. Not all of them, but it does give you a nice insight in which links Google feels might be important.

As an SEO or even webmaster you want to analyse these links to find if some need changing or in case of ‘bad links’, if some need removal. That can be a lot of work. Majestic SEO today rolls out a feature which will help SEOs get under way with this: the “Bulk Backlinks Checker” tool with Google Webmaster Tools. This tool allows you to upload links in bulk, from Google Webmastertools, and check them. (more…)

The 3 Link Building Tools I Always Use (And How I use Them)

linkbuilding2

I’m often asked what link building tools I use.  The truth is, that I don’t use that many and the ones that I do use aren’t that fancy.  There are loads of tools out there and the market is certainly very saturated right now, but I always find myself using the same tools over and over again.  I admit that my process for link building may not be the most mind boggling, but it works for me even if it does take a bit longer!

In this post I’m going to talk about the tools that I use the most and for fairness, include a few others that I use but perhaps not as often. (more…)

LinkDAQ: Show Your Trading Skills with Links

linkdaq

This weekend Dom Hodgson, amongst others well known for organising Thinkvisibility, and who is currently doing a special don’t tweet the bride, decided to do his own personal ‘hack day weekend’ and create something special. What came out of the weekend is a new game to play for SEOs: LinkDAQ.

What it basically is, is a trading game, buying and selling stocks. But instead of using ‘real stocks’ LinkDAQ lets you trade links. (more…)

The Joy Of Bookmarklets : Shortcuts That Save Time

jquery

I’m a huge, HUGE advocate of anything that saves me time as an SEO and, I’ll be honest, anything that’s a little techy and whizzy makes me happy too. Bookmarklets fit the bill on both counts and have saved me so much time over the years that I wanted to pull as many resources about them as I could together in one place. For anyone unfamiliar with them, bookmarklets are small pieces of javascript code that provide extra functionality to a web page.

They act as a mini browser addon, but without adding the extra strain on your browser that sometime occurs from having to many extensions – win! I think it’s important to note that I don’t come from a development background and don’t really code as part of my day to day marketing activities (but that’s a topic for another day….) so this post won’t be full of how to’s from me, but plenty from other people who know the subject in far greater depth than I ever could.
