The Impact of Social on Search – Integration Series

JC-Penney

In the series about Integration today we look at how Social, Search and Branding influence one another. The post is written by one of the industries young talents Sam Noble, who specializes in exactly this combination.

Before the Internet really began to boom, when we wanted to make a purchase it would involve taking a trip down to our local shopping centre to look around the shops before deciding on what to buy. We relied heavily on the shop assistant to talk to us about the product we wanted to purchase and other than word of mouth recommendation from friends; the shop assistant was ultimately the one who would convince us to buy it.

This process was exactly the same when it came to deciding on signing up to a service, buying a new car, getting car insurance and even something as critical like buying a house!

Now the Internet is at an all-time high and with the introduction of social media over the past 10 years, it is becoming more apparent than ever that all businesses big and small need to be paying attention. (more…)

Who Should Represent Your Brand on the Social Web?

crowd

Given that engaging on the social web can benefit your brand’s marketing, recruitment, PR, sales, customer service, and other departments, the question of ‘who should manage and represent your brand on the social web?’ will inevitably arise. The answer is, all of them.

I believe that all employees with a passion and interest in representing the brand should be encouraged to. Utilising the expertise and networks of the people within your business is incredibly valuable when it comes to engaging on the social web and is not something that can be easily outsourced. (more…)

Social Spamming Is Coming to A Social Network Near You

social-spam-intro

Spam, its everywhere. It started off in our mailboxes, then went on the Search Result Pages and is now coming to a Social Network near you.

Impermium decided to take a look at social spam, where is it coming from, what is it about and why is it spreading so “rampantly” and how can you beat it. And in line with Halloween they made an appropriate infographic with that. (more…)

5 simple-but-effective SEO/Social tactics I’ve seen over the last month..

blindfolded

Happy All-Hallow’s Day State of Searchers! Or All Saints Day for those that prefer. Let’s start this post with a little ‘Did You Know’ fact just to ensure it is educational from top to bottom. So, did you know…

“In Western Christian theology, All Saints Day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven.” (Thank you wikipedia). That sounds pretty special to me, a vision of happiness, perfection and clarity. One can dream eh.  But on that note, how about a little happiness and clarity closer to home? SEO heaven?

Yes that is my rather awkward seguing into the main event, some great examples of simple linkbait or visibility tactics that I’ve seen in the past few weeks. Rather than theorise or show amazing examples/ideas that are nearly impossible for the average company to implement, I thought I’d share some examples of marketing tactics that I’ve been impressed with recently simply because they were so very, well, simple. Social Advertising: Is That Where The Money Is?

social-advertising-intro

Social Media, is there any money in it? For many there (still) isn’t because they can’t figure it out. But there is a lot of money going around in social.

Where does that money go? Mostly to publishers who have advertisers, after all, with social you can now reach the big mass right? This infographic takes a look at the advertising side of Social based on a research. How is the satisfaction, what are the objectives and how do you measure? (more…)

6 Ways Google Gets Your Social Data

Social-Data

Google loves data. And data has become much more important to Google in the past few years. Where Google used to be able to get data from the websites and rank them based on that data, in the past few years another important factor has come along: social.

In the past, if one person thought a website was good they would link to it from their own website. Google would pick that up and consider the link as a ‘recommendation’ for the website. That has now changed. The recommendations are no longer ‘just’ done via a link on a website. Most recommendations now come from social networks. Actual people sharing. And a lot more than before too. There are tons of links going around every day. (more…)

Google News Badges: Google’s Newest Social Data Tool

Google-badges

Google just gave us an insight into some of their next social steps. As said earlier this week, Google is far from done when it comes to social or Google Plus. The ‘project’ goes on and on.

Even though at first sight it might not seem related, the just released Google News badges is a social feature which again has all the signals in it: data and the social connections within content. (more…)

Mark Zuckerberg’s Law of Social Sharing

Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t seem to be scared of Google Plus at all. Still he did feel the need at the Facebook announcement last week to adress the growth of Facebook: users are now publicly sharing stuff around 4 billion a day. That is a LOT.

He also explained his Law of Social Sharing, Y = C *2^X :

Facebook now second-most popular in UK

facebook-europe

UKOM/Nielsen reports that for the first time ever Facebook surpassed Microsoft to become the second-most popular website in the UK. They grew 7 percent compared to a year earlier to 26.8 million visitors in Britain in May.

With that Microsoft falls back to the number three spot. MSN/WindowsLive/Bing sites combined were still good for 26.2 million visits from Brits. Google is still leading the dance with 33.9 million. Nielsen came to these numbers by looking at their panel of 50.000 people. (more…)

Eric Schmidt at D9: “Google Will Get Social Data In Alternative Ways”

D9–AllThingsD-schmidt

It is maybe my favorite conference which I have never attended: the D-conferences, organized by All Things Digital. In these conferences Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg interview industry leaders. This results in many great talks where Mossberg and Swisher meanwhile also know how to get some interesting stuff out of them.

At the current D-conference, D9, they interviewed again several ‘big names’. One of them being Eric Schmidt. The former Google CEO sat down and discussed in a very light way his current role at Google, how he is never going to leave there (he even told them Google could probably store his coffin somewhere in the Plex) and about failing social.
