The Division Within SEO: Google is our friend/enemy

SEO - criminal or hero?

Over the weekend there was an interesting post up on SEOmoz which chronicled Rand Fishkin’s discussion with SEO Book’s Aaron Wall about outing web spammers. It’s definitely worth a read and will provide some background information for this blog post.

Basically Rand is in favour of pointing out what he believes are bad SEO practices, specifically web spam, and Aaron is against it. Some other SEOs contributed to the debate, as well as a follow-up discussion I had with Rand and others on Saturday. (more…)

SEO Salaries in the US: a Break Down

seo-salary-guide

There are people who think that SEO’s are making money with air, claiming they do stuff well but in fact they just rely on the ‘great content’ which comes from the businesses who pay them, because after all, content is all you need to rank.

Luckily there are many who know better. But making money as a business and making money working at an SEO Company are two different things. Onward Search looked at where companies in the US pay best. Looking for an SEO job in the US? You might want to check this one out first. (more…)

Top 10 Blogs That Are Not About SEO But You Should Be Reading Anyway

reading-list-beach

It’s that time of year again when people fall over one another to publish a list of ‘best blog posts of 2011‘ or ‘blogs to watch in 2012‘ or ‘digital marketing trends that will rock your world next year‘. Even State of Search can’t escape posts like that, because people apparently like to read it.

I figured if such lists get published anyway, I might as well make one of my own – but this time I’ll make one that could actually break the mold and, you know, be useful. So I thought I’d compose a slightly different list. Specifically, a list of blogs that are NOT about SEO – or only mention it in passing – but that you should be reading anyway. Because the stuff that gets published there is, simply put, epically awesome. (more…)

A Perspective on the SEO Industry

SEO-Industry-Survey-intro

A very interesting infographic today, all about the search industry. This infographic was created by Datadial.net based on a Twitter survey they performed a few weeks ago.

They asked 22 questions about working in SEO, from where the SEOs are based to ‘do you buy links’ and “Have you ever had a site penalized?”. The results are made into this infographic. A very nice way of doing a survey and presenting the results. (more…)

Integrated Marketing – From SEO to TV (by @andybetts1)

cloud-andy

Andy Betts is a well respected marketing expert in the search industry. Because he is not your average SEO he has an interesting take on all matters. A person very fit to write about integration. And he goes all the way, from SEO to TV!

After reading the latest in the State of Search Integrated Marketing series it is clear, beyond doubt, that the online market is shifting rapidly from delivering campaigns in isolation to maximizing revenue for clients and brands alike through integrated approach’s to marketing optimization.

You have seen many a great example of integrated marketing in action in this series. So I am going to go a little leftfield. Whilst marketers get to grasps with the integration and holistic use of search, social, display, and digital marketing channels a huge challenge, often over looked or not addressed, still faces many business owners, agencies, and CEO’s alike – integrating and optimizing talent. Honest SEO Conference Advice

live-blogging

After another busy year packed with SEO conferences I thought it would be a good time to lay out some tips to organisers, speakers and attendees alike from my personal experiences with conferences over the last two years.

The aim here is to be as constructive as possible, but to do so it’s important also to provide as much honest advice as is possible as well.I hope that this will be constructive and useful in some fashion for anyone that has anything to do with conference organisation, speaking or attendance… and hopefully won’t preclude me from ever speaking at a conference again! It is already the fourth post in the Integration series but only the first male to contribute! Today Raventools’ Taylor Pratt takes the stage. He is looking at PPC, Social Media and Conversion to SEO.

Over the last year I’ve been so excited to see just how many people are beginning to take a different approach to their online marketing. A holistic approach, if you will. Is Content Still King?

content-for-seo-intro

Content is King, it is something many marketers will say, and its also something many SEOs will say. Some over-rate it however by saying that if you “just” put up enough content, you will be fine.

Content will remain one of the, if not the, important elements in optimizing. This infographic looks at why content is important for SEO. (more…)

Three Essential Skills for Beginning SEOs

start-race

There have been a few blog posts doing the rounds recently about what makes a good SEO, and what needs to be done to ensure new entrants in to the industry pick up the required skills and know-how quickly and accurately.

I’m not shy about jumping on bandwagons (nor falling off of them for that matter), so allow me to add my own insights as to what I believe make a good set of foundational skills every (beginning) SEO should possess: (more…)

To Build or not to Build

nesbitt-logo

This is a guest post by Richard Shove, who is SEO Specialist at OMD UK. Richard has a strong opinion on the industry and wanted to share his view on whether or not we should all be learning code to become a good SEO.

Before I get started, I apologise in advance as this post may initially come across a little negative. It’s not intended to offend or criticize, I’m Scottish and it’s in my nature to be sarcastic and angry. Bear with me though, there is a meaning to the rant.

SEO killed the hyperlink

google-hyperlink

The current web was built around links, or in the case of the world wide web: hyperlinks. ‘The intention in the design of the web was that normal links should simply be references, with no implied meaning.’ (Quote by Tim Berners-Lee).

Of course links to other documents always have an implied meaning, mostly to refer to related information, further readings or to mention an original source, but always to be of help to the user. At least that was the original purpose of the hyperlink. (more…)
