We have tested Fresh Web Explorer, the new mentions tool from SEOMoz. Do we love it?

Fresh Web Explorer (FWE) is the newest addition of SEOMoz tools. It is no secret to the people who know me that I both love, praise and use these tools on a daily basis. Some even accuse me of having a major small crush on Rand Fishkin, the way I go on about “his tools”. In other words, my hopes for this new addition are high.

FWE is a mention tool that ”lets you research and compare mentions and links to your domain using the power of the Freshscape index”, a “30 day index of 4.3 million feeds (and counting).” FWE is not real time, but pretty close, there’s a new Freshscape index every eight hours. (more…)

Visualising the Link Graph, How Natural are you?

Visualising the Link Graph

Last Year I wrote a post about 16 ways to visualise back link data, to be honest I could have listed a hundred but didn’t for two reasons, one blog writing does takes time and two I listed ones I often used and found productive in one form or another.

Of course the landscape in search has changed over the past 12 months with the obvious question, how reliable is link data when a disavow tool has been introduced?

I’ve always been an enthusiastic user of the Yahoo Site Explorer and its free features. Clearly, its shutdown left a big gap that can’t be filled overnight. So where can I get a quick overview of my existing backlink profile from now? There are a few tools on the market to this: Majestic SEO, Open Site Explorer, Openlinkgraph and the new development of Cemper.com: QBL. The Quick Backlink Tool (QBL) is part of the Link Research Tools and it seems like an affordable alternative to me, especially since Christoph Cemper offered some free accounts for State of Search readers! Linkresearchtools launches SERP Research Tool

Linkresearchtools has launched a new feature within their tool: the SERP Research Tool. The tool helps you find link prospects in the SERPS of Google and filters out the actual valuable ones. Next to the Basic SEO stats you can add different parameters like traffic indicators, Social Votes and Mozrank. It actually filters the SERPS for you and then filters out the ones you already have a link on. With more filter options you can narrow down your search. It is a pretty impressive feature. Take a look yourself below.

The first paragraph you just read is something which many marketers will recognize and it is the reason for existence for many tools out there that give you insight in links. Tools that either use search engines like Google or Yahoo, tools that use other tools and tools that scrape the web themselves. All these tools have one issue however: is the link still there? Search Engine Accessibility: Easily Missed Checks That Make a Huge Difference

This is a buffalo

I’m not kidding about this – I recently came across a website that was blocking a user agent from a very well known search engine. No one at the company had any idea of the situation, and this particular situation had been costing them a ton of traffic over weeks and weeks.

Time to get the honesty box out: When was the last time you switched user agents? Checked a 304 not modified response? Made sure your canonical www redirect was working correctly?
