Can Social Media Activity Boost Rankings?

testing-social-signals-intro

Don’t we all want an answer to the question whether or not social media activity indeed boosts organic search ranking? So far its been a lot of guessing and that will probably continue to be so for a while.

Some have tested things, like for example yesterday Branded3 published the results of an interesting study they did. Another who tried to figure it out was Tasty Placement, who created 6 similary-sized US websites in 6 different cities. They tried to capture the average change in rankings when promoting on different social media channels.

The results you can see in the infographic below. According to them Google+ gave them the most ranking boost, even though the numbers are low. (more…)

Social vs Search: And The Winner Is…

social-vs-search-infographic-intro

Which one is better: Social or Search? To be honest, it is not a fair question. Maybe we should even say they don’t compare or they need to go together.

Still MDG Advertising thinks it is interesting to compare them, to see how they ‘weigh in’. And they are right, it is interesting. Which one is better for lead generation, what is better for brand awareness, local visibility or interactivity? All elements looked at in the infographic below.

And the winner is… (more…)

Integration Series: From Steve Jobs To Social Search

SOS-Integrationseries-oval

In December we have been doing something special on State of Search: we have had a series of guest posts feature on State of Search from several very interesting and very high profiled bloggers and industry celebrities.

The series of guest posts were all around one specific topic: integration. Since marketing these days is all about integrating different channels. We believe that integration is what its all about in 2012. So we decided to ask people to give us their different perspectives on integration. How does search match with social, how does paid match with search, and what about PR and conversion?

The result is a great series of which you can find the intro’s below. So you have a nice overview of what the integration series was all about.  (more…)

Wrap Up of the International Search Summit – ISS London 2011

iss-logo

The International Search Summit took place in London at the British Library on November 24th 2011. Having been to ISS New York earlier in the year, I thought it would be hard to top , but the UK session surpassed expectations with not only an impressive line up, but high level delegates from the world of international search.

Each session one was a gem in it’s own right. If you haven’t yet booked on to an ISS I recommend it, as it could just give you an insight into strategy that you may not be using for your less global campaigns. (more…)

The Impact of Social on Search – Integration Series

JC-Penney

In the series about Integration today we look at how Social, Search and Branding influence one another. The post is written by one of the industries young talents Sam Noble, who specializes in exactly this combination.

Before the Internet really began to boom, when we wanted to make a purchase it would involve taking a trip down to our local shopping centre to look around the shops before deciding on what to buy. We relied heavily on the shop assistant to talk to us about the product we wanted to purchase and other than word of mouth recommendation from friends; the shop assistant was ultimately the one who would convince us to buy it.

This process was exactly the same when it came to deciding on signing up to a service, buying a new car, getting car insurance and even something as critical like buying a house!

Now the Internet is at an all-time high and with the introduction of social media over the past 10 years, it is becoming more apparent than ever that all businesses big and small need to be paying attention. (more…)

5 simple-but-effective SEO/Social tactics I’ve seen over the last month..

blindfolded

Happy All-Hallow’s Day State of Searchers! Or All Saints Day for those that prefer. Let’s start this post with a little ‘Did You Know’ fact just to ensure it is educational from top to bottom. So, did you know…

“In Western Christian theology, All Saints Day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven.” (Thank you wikipedia). That sounds pretty special to me, a vision of happiness, perfection and clarity. One can dream eh.  But on that note, how about a little happiness and clarity closer to home? SEO heaven?

Yes that is my rather awkward seguing into the main event, some great examples of simple linkbait or visibility tactics that I’ve seen in the past few weeks. Rather than theorise or show amazing examples/ideas that are nearly impossible for the average company to implement, I thought I’d share some examples of marketing tactics that I’ve been impressed with recently simply because they were so very, well, simple. I Want to be Number 1! The Evolution of Making Page 1

Evolution-Making-Page-1-intro

We all want to be on page one from Google, right? And before that we wanted to be on page one of Altavista, Lycos or even AskJeeves. We’ve built an entire industry on that phenomenon, trying to get to page one, and then number one.

Searchenginejournal is doing some great infographics lately and this is one of them: the evolution of making page 1. From Lycos to Google, from DMOZ to Panda Update. (more…)

Finally Google+ Has Search (and more)

Google-search

When Google last week opened up its API’s I predicted that pretty soon we would also be seeing a search within Google+. Something which has strangely been missing from the start. If it wasn’t going to be Google itself, with the API surely a developer would come up with the search functionality pretty soon, after all we saw the same happening with the share functionality on Google Plus.

But this time Google didn’t let the developers beat them. The search box on top of Google Plus, which used to only search for people now searches through Google+. (more…)

Looking at the why of the Semantic Web

The “Semantic Web”, a term much used, but not much understood. Why do we even bother using it in the first place? Because in the end, it does make sence. At least, the ‘why’ behind the Semantic Web makes sense. And maybe we won’t be using the term that much, Semantic Web is coming. Just look at the user intent many search engines are now trying to ‘grab’.

The documentary below (found through Mashable) gives a good insight in the idea behind the Semantic Web. This video was actually made by a student, Kate Ray, who interviewed several people to get an insight in the Semantic Web.

If you were just getting a sandwich for lunch, I’d suggest you start up this video while eating your sandwich!
