Facebook pulls review functionality from pages – next steps for SMBs

facebook-block-logo

Last week admins for Facebook pages that were utilizing the Reviews application were warned that this functionality (along with discussions) would cease to exist from the 31st October, with Facebook taking the official line that:

“We’ve found the best way to encourage conversation and feedback is through posts and comments on your Wall, so we’re removing the Reviews and Discussions tabs for now.  We’re working hard to help you moderate, filter and manage content in one powerful place.  Stay tuned.

You won’t be able to access your reviews and discussions once they’re removed, so please save this content if you’d like to keep it for future reference.

On place pages with a location, fans can still write a recommendation for their friends or others from the right-column that says Recommendations” (more…)

Critical Thinking for the Discerning SEO – an ebook by Doc Sheldon

Critical thinking

I’m a total sucker for marketing ebooks, having downloaded my fair share of corkers (and stinkers) in my time.

There’s definitely something to be said for the format of the ebook given the propensity for fast paced change in the field of digital marketing.  Additionally, the absence of lengthy lead in times for publishing means the content can be completely ‘up to the minute’, and this combined with low production costs, and no minimum runs makes it the format of choice for many writers looking to launch their content upon the world.

When I saw Barry Adam’s tweet announcing the launch of Doc Sheldon’s book I clicked straight through… (more…)

Review: Ontolo – The Linkbuilding Book

As our connections to each other are the stuff of human relationships, so are links between sites the very stuff of the web.

I was therefore overjoyed to read Ontolo, and to find that here is a documented guide; from concept to objective to  methodology to realisation; for pretty much every  quality method of building and attracting the links that matter. (I felt I’d found a kindred spirit and something of a validation of our more PR focused approach at theMediaFlow too.)

Authored by Garrett French and Ben Wills Ontolo – The Linkbuilding Book, is possibly the most thorough documentation of linkbuilding to success. It is important to point out that the foundation of the Ontolo mindset reads to me as one of “links as business-driving” endeavours, rather than purely “links for rank sake”. On the other hand, if you’re more into this kind of crap, then this book isn’t for you. (more…)

Geosurf: a proxy service on steroids

Geosurf-Speedtest

Working in Europe for several foreign companies I often need proxies to check local rankings, see how marketing campaigns are appearing in other countries or to check one of our geo-targeted websites.
The problem with these proxies is that most time they are pretty slow and insecure. So when Bas was looking for a volunteer to test a new service called Geosurf, I stepped forward immediately!

The 5 Best SEO Books That Aren’t About SEO

Thinking Online books

I get asked quite often what beginning SEOs need to do to become advanced practitioners of our craft. Specifically they want to know which books to read.

There are a handful of good books about SEO out there – I recently reviewed Danny Dover’s new SEO Secrets book – but no matter how good they are, none of these books will make you an advanced SEO.

When I pondered this question in detail, I realised that the books that have shaped me the most as an SEO, and have helped bring my skills to higher levels, aren’t actually SEO books. Yet these books have been vital study material in my continued development as a SEO professional.

Here I will share the five best books for SEOs that aren’t actually about SEO. (more…)

Linkdex review: a tool as your new SEO assistant

Linkdex-dashboard

At SES London I talked to the team of Linkdex. They wanted to show me their new tool. To be really honest: many people want to show me what they’ve built so they hope I will blog about it. In some cases I get pleasantly surprised in other cases it is hard for me to hide from those who want free promotion for a sucky tool. In this case that was different. It became clear very quickly that Linkdex had built something which could be very useful for many search marketers out there.

Linkdex offered me the opportunity to play with the tool for a while. I found that the tool is very useful and has a lot of potential. Below you can read my findings and review of the tool. At the end of the review you can sign up to be one of 50 to try out the tool. (more…)

Book review: Social Media Marketing by Li Evans (@storyspinner)

Social Media Marketing by Li Evans - cover

There are many books out there about search and social media. Which one to read? Do they all tell the truth? Is there one book out there which hands me the holy grail in its copy? Probably not, there are many books which are full of nonsense, but a lot of books can tell you some pretty good stuff which can really help you forward.

In this review I wanted to find out if the book “Social Media Marketing” by Li Evans belonged to the first or second category. I was pleasantly surprised.

When I got Li’s book (which she generously allowed me to share with the State of Search blogging team) I was afraid that one thing would happen: I would open the book and it would tell me how I should open up a Twitter account and set up a Facebook Page and get tons of followers. When I did opened the book and started reading something else happened. (more…)

Review: SEO Effect

SEO EffectSEO Effect is a new suite of search engine optimization tools that’s currently under development by a team headed by Dutch search marketing expert Keesjan Deelstra. I had the opportunity to review the SEO Effect software recently, unleashing it on two of my websites.

First of all it’s important to state that SEO Effect is a work in progress. So far the tool suite has a keyword research module and a trend monitoring module. Under development are the site optimisation, link strategy, and task management modules. (more…)
