Rel=’Publisher’ for Brand-Savvy Marketers

I’ve been banging on about Rel=Author and Rich Snippets for a while now. Partly because I like the idea of associating content with people, and partly because I think it’s a good insight into Google’s future plans.

It totally makes sense, to me at least, that the worlds of SEO and Social Media should be run in unison – complementing each other. Rel=Publisher, however, often gets left by the wayside; I view it as Rel=Author’s ugly twin, the one that no-one really talks about, or wants to get to know. But I’m going to tell you why you should! Good Rel.ations – A Beginners Guide to Rel Attributes

rel-attributes

In recent times we’ve covered a lot of stories about HTML tags that include, canonical, author, publisher and many more for reasons that they are (relatively) new; topical, useful and beneficial for webmasters seeking to get more (and more relevant) traffic to more and more appropriately indexed pages.

We bandy about terms like “attributes”, “tags” assuming we’re talking to an initiated audience which is often the case. However not all our readers are search professionals, web developers or HTML proficient. Many are webmasters and small business owners who wear many hats. We thought it might be useful to collectively examine the more useful of these tags in their employ as rel attributes; particularly the ones that might directly boost our efficacy or solve a problem from an organic search perspective. Google Authorship Profiles: No Verification Needed?

google-authorship

Google and authority. It clearly is going to play a larger role in the search result pages in the coming months. Where your average search page used to be ‘just 10 blue links’ and Universal Search already brought images and videos to the search results pages, the rel=author is bringing the authority to the result pages.

To help webmasters get the profiles of their authors visible in the search results Google created what is called the “rel=author tag” which allows webmasters to tell Google who is the author of the page.

author-rank

We have covered already quite a bit on author rank this week. First there were the e-mails Google is sending out to authors and earlier today Jeroen wrote a great extensive post on the importance of Authorship. That could be enough for one week, but we didn’t want to hold this back from you.

Google has confirmed to Searchengineland that it is now not just showing the authorship markup and showing the ‘more post by’ link, but it is also showing three extra posts from the author when a user comes back to the search results, provided it seems as if they really liked the post they were just reading. Authorship: What and How and Why is it so Important to Google?

Authorship

Lately we are spotting all kinds of small developments pointing towards more importance for the authorship markup in Google. We’ve recently spotted Google E-mailing Authors about their Authorship Markups, Google showing authorship markup even when it’s not properly implemented and Google bringing back author stats in webmaster tools. Apparently authorship is important to Google. But why? (more…)

Google E-mailing Authors about their Authorship Markups

example-authorship-markup

The Authorship markups from Google have been around for a while now, Here at State of Search the authors have one as well, which means that if posts do well in the rankings you might see the author’s image in front of the result. A nice feature.

Since a couple of days Google seems to be sending out e-mails to those who have implemented or changed their authorship profile, welcoming them to Google Authorship. (more…)
