Google to take first steps to integrate + into search soon: realtime is gone

realtime-not-found

It has been the buzz of the internet world in the past week, and will most probably continue to be so in the upcoming weeks or even months: Google +. Opinions on the new released Google product differ. And these opinions sometimes differ dramatically. Some people compare it to Google Wave and already have declared it dead before it has even come alive. Others believe Google has finally struck gold when it comes to social.

Most people however believe that this really is it. This is Google’s Social Network, and this is what we will have to work with in the future. But don’t be fooled: Google has just started. And we will see next steps pretty soon. Starting with realtime search, which has disappeared from Google, for now. (more…)

Google adding other social sources to realtime, social efforts evolve

quora-realtime

When Google first launched realtime search everybody got excited. Finally they picked up on Twitter and showed us real time results. For a short period there was a real hype going around (it even got me a link and quote on the BBC-website). And then it went quiet.

It turned out the realtime results in the middle of a page were mostly ignored by users. Then Google moved the realtime results to a separate page within Google, only showing the ‘real time block’ in special cases. All that time the real time results were mostly results from Twitter and Google’s latests indexed blogs. Now it seems that Google finally is broadening realtime search. A Quora thread and following Techcrunch-post indicate that Google Realtime Search now also shows results from Quora, Gowalla, Me2day, Twitgoo, and possibly others.

The thread-owner, Dan Leveille, noted that if you do a search for “site:quora.com” in the realtime search section you get Quora results from just minutes ago. You get questions, answers and votes. (more…)

All flights cancelled because of volcano: how can you help?

Europe has been ‘hit’ with a natural disaster this week. In Iceland a volcano burst leaving not only about 700 people homeless, it also left people stranded all over Europe with flights being canceled all over the continent.

As you can expect this event has been discussed all over the Internet. Several websites are down, others (like the Schiphol airport) have put up a plain html page because they can’t handle the traffic. A lot of activity on the web, all for a sad reason. The information people are looking for is also very difficult to filter and to find out the right answers to your questions. A quick look around the web also showed that not many are actually using the situation for their own benefit. Is it because its not ‘decent’? Or are many out there just not paying attention?

Lets take a look at a few opportunities which you have to gain from the situation and how you can help those looking to go home at the same time. (more…)

The Real Time Hype: take it or leave it?

Search is changing rapidly. Search Engines are looking at user intent and what users want. And speed is one thing which users want badly. Get information as fast as you possibly can. It doesn’t matter if its not accurate or if its ‘only’ written in 140 characters, as long as its fast.

The need for speed makes that new tools are developed which makes information go around the web, and with that the world, faster by the second. Status updates on Twitter and Facebook off course are the best examples of content going around the web in split seconds. A continuos conversation. But what can we do with that information? Do we really care? (more…)

The real time danger: Google opens up for spam and scam

This post was originally posted by Bas van den Beld on Searchcowboys.

Real time search is there. And it looks great. And it works great. It’s really great and I love it. This really is the new step in search. But are we ready for it? Is Google ready for it? Looking at what a couple of SEOs at SES Chicago found not. But spammers might be ready. Real time search could be a great spamming tool.

At SES Chicago Outspoken Media blogger Rae Hoffman, aka Sugarrae noted the new real time search feature and immediately started testing. She was surprised in what she saw and pulled Dave Naylor, Michael Gray and Frank Watson into a room and the four hard core search experts found some troubling results. (more…)

Search is everywhere and the future is search

This post was originally posted by Bas van den Beld on Searchcowboys.

You can easily say ‘search is everywhere’. And search is much more than just Googling. As Dave Naylor pointed out in a tweet this morning we are now also searching on Twitter or Facebook, making the term “Googling” less relevant every day.

Search goes beyond the standard search engines like Google or Yahoo. Even with Bing entering the battle its not just about ‘regular search’ anymore. Search is more, a lot more. And the future is search. (more…)
