I’m With Stupid: How The Internet Is Dumbing Down The Next Generation

google

I’m sure that many of us, not least of all those who make a living from it, can conceive of a world without the internet. For Generation Y, it has become the all encompassing font of easily accessible knowledge, entertainment and communication. Our lives have become enriched and transformed because of it and I for one don’t think I’ll ever get over the excitement of actively participating in this extraordinary adventure.

The fact that I don’t have to spend hours in the library, or work out complicated maths equations in my head or wait forever for important letters to arrive any more is still a thing of wonder. Like most of my peers, I tend not to take the internet for granted (not that much anyway) precisely because my generation did go to the library, do maths without a calculator and spent hours writing letters with an actual pen – we grew up learning these skills because there was no other way. You learnt your times table by rote and practised your neat handwriting again and again until you got it right, it’s what we all did. (more…)

Facebook Graph Search: Marketing Opportunities and a Potential Privacy Nightmare

Facebook-focus

There it finally was, the news of Facebook launching a search engine. Not the ‘Google Killer’ some expected, or maybe hoped for, but interesting nonetheless, as a search engine within the enormous amount of data that Facebook holds.

It is a database and a feature full of possibilities. But with that it is also a feature full of dangers. Jeroen yesterday already pointed at some very interesting questions that come with the launch of Facebook Graph Search. And to my surprise, he was one of the few.

Most people (bloggers) focus on the what of the new search: what is it, how cool is it. Some look at the why (is it to compete with Google, to get more advertising money). Only a few look at the consequences of the new feature. And based on some testing Dutch Internet Expert Henk van Ess did, these consequences can be big. Really big. (more…)

Facebook is Testing the Patience, Trust and Loyalty of Users

slippery-floor

Facebook is not in the best place at the moment. After the failed IPO people are watching the Social Media giant with suspicion. And on more than one level. There is the money part and there is the privacy part. And in both these areas Facebook now seems to be testing the patience and loyalty of the users.

The recent launch of Facebook Offers should be giving the network more financial leeway but instead is giving a lot of users annoyance. On top of that Facebook was ‘accused’ of putting private messages on public timelines and at the same time rumours of Facebook working with a controversial data company raise fear of what will happen to privacy matters. The Risks of Posting on Social Networks

You still see it more often than not, people making ‘public’ updates on social networks, not realising it is there for the entire world to see and in some cases to abuse. The risks of posting on social networks are clearly not clear to everybody. This infographic is about just that.

German Privacy Fighters Now After Facebook

facebook_privacy

Germany has always been a country in which privacy matters are very important. Some say it’s the result of the countries history, others say it’s just how the Germans are. We’ve seen the Germans ‘fight’ Google over privacy matters the past few years, from Streetview issues up to the point where they almost banned Google Analytics, something which is recently been followed by Norway.

With Google things seem to have calmed down a little after the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information struck a deal with Google, but now another Internet giant seems to be the target: Facebook. (more…)

Google Analytics About to be Banned in Norway?

ban

The Data Protection Bureau in Norway seems to have concluded that the use of Google Analytics on a website in Norway could very well be illegal. It says it is ‘not in accordance with Norwegian law’.

The ruling is based on the fact that it is unclear how IP addresses are being treated within Google Analytics. The Norwegian authorities believe that when a business starts using Google Analytics and accepts the terms of agreement they are at that point giving Google access to personal data of website visitors. Google Removes Social Circle Data

Google-Social-404

Google Search Plus Your World is all about social data. Many things Google does in social is aimed at getting information from you so they can build up your profile and return you search results and other related information which is personalised for you, based on your social graph.

To do that Google needs to know your social graph. It needs to know how you connect to entities and to other people. In some of my presentations I showed some of what Google knew of you because Google gave that information away, for free. Now it seems to have pulled the social circle data. There is no announcement and you can still find the search result, but the page itself gives a 404. (more…)

The Ultimate Cookie Legislation Guide

cookie-monster

I don’t think any one of us would have predicted that when we saw cookie monster in Sesame Street cookies would have such a big impact on our lives. We might have thought we needed to protect our cookies, but we probably all thought cookie monster was after the ones in our mothers cookie basket. Never ones which made sure we did our jobs right.

Now the cookie monster has changed into a governmental creature. And instead of eating all our cookies, he is simply telling us we have to ask permission. Hmm it does sound a lot like my mother back then if you think about it…

Ever since the EU decided on the new cookie regulations the online industry has been in distress: what is really happening? what are we supposed to do? What are the implications? Nobody really seems to know, not even those who made the regulations in the first place. (more…)

You Are NOT Safe Online

Privacy is a ‘hot topic’ these days: how much does Google know? And Facebook? Maybe they even know more! Privacy is history Mark Zuckerberg believes. And he might be right. Look at how unsafe you really are online… (more…)
