So You Want to Run an SEO Conference? Lessons from ProSEO

Hi Everyone! My name is Sam Crocker, I am a Lead SEO at Distilled in London and I’m extremely excited to be writing my first post for State of Search (hopefully the first of many).  Today I’ve been asked to share some of the lessons we’ve learned from hosting this year’s ProSEO seminar.

It has been an exhausting few weeks for the team but I think there should definitely be some good lessons for anyone who has ever thought “this seems like an easy way to make some money”.

A very special thank you to our organiser Lynsey Little for sharing some of the things she learned and for everyone who filled out the feedback forms that helped me write this post. (more…)

How to find bloggers in your niche to help you out

In my presentations I often have several slides in there which are all about using bloggers to get more visibility in search engines. Bloggers already have rankings, already have webpages which are being well indexed by Google and already have authority. Why not use that authority? The big question however is: how can you find them?

One example I gave in my presentation at A4U was about how Universal Film Studios had used only seven influential bloggers to spread their message about the new Harry Potter Theme Park they were launching. Its a good example of how to build up your brand without actually spreading the message yourself.

Another good example I give more often is the one of Sony. When launching a new LCD Television, they looked for the influential bloggers in their industry and used them to spread the word about the new television even before the TV was actually for sale. They didn’t use the press until the television was actually in the stores. They gave the bloggers previews, send them pictures and videos and had them discussing it. That made that when the TV actually was there Sony dominated the search results. Not just with their own site, because they gained a lot of links out of the use of the bloggers, but also through the bloggers-websites. They were the ‘other’ results on the page. And they were all talking about the Sony TV. Some branding that was. (more…)

  • I got to talk for no less than an hour on a topic which lies really close to me. Since a few months I am the “social marketing ambassador” (yes the jokes on the term ‘ambassador’ are many : -) ) and I am ‘hooked’ to search since many years now. In my view we will see a more integrated way of searching in the future. The different channels will be combined which means we will have to target our audiences differently. With “social” getting into our world rapidly we will need a different approach. And thats the approach I discussed last week in London.

You can find the presentation below, but I thought I’d put my talks in writing and let you in on the world I think we are going to see in the near future. (more…)

Matt Cutts about SSL, privacy, SEO, hacking and more at Search University

In Belgium a group of search marketers have set up a very interesting initiative: Search University. In different sessions you get informed on all sorts of different topics. And they are doing good. Already in their second edition they managed to get Matt Cutts to talk about SEO. And more. See the video below. Cutts is nice and open, and has a nice and interesting talk.

Video: Jeff Jarvis talks to Google

Jeff Jarvis wrote the book “What Would Google Do“. But in the process he never talked to anybody from Google. After the book was finished he did. He was invited by Google to give a talk at Google HQ. In the series “Authors @Google” Jarvis came to talk to Google employees. And because of YouTube we can see that too. Keep in mind though that it was early 2009 when he held this talk.

The Evolution of Social Search (presentation)

There has been a lot of talk about “social search” in the past year. The Search Engines are trying as hard as they can to catch up with what’s going on with the evolution of social media. The best examples off course being the integration of Twitter and the “results from your social circle”. It seems as if many are still looking for ways to get a grip on the social search. And that will probably go on for a while.

Below a presentation I found on Slideshare about Social Search. It answers some questions and raises some others, but its a nice watch. Enjoy.

The Five Best Slide Decks from SMX Advanced London

You’ll already know from my run down of day one of SMX Advanced London there was a heap of great presentations and session. Day two was a bit of a belter as well.

Already every man and his dog has published their live blog or notes but to sum up my time there I wanted to highlight and share five of the most informative and interesting slidedecks from the conference.

A good slide show is a work of art and can really get across the point so much better than a quick transcription of their words.

So without further ado here, in no particular order are my five favourites. (more…)

A4U Expo presentations: from linkbuilding to Universal Search

The last two days Munich was filled with a lot of great content. The south German city was the host of this years

Most of the speakers presentations have been posted online. Below you can find a selection. On the A4U Munich page you can find more! (more…)
