Tailor that Press Release Distribution

press-release

Even experienced PR people fumble, on occasion, with press release distribution services.

The humble press release was once a factual information sheet, and trainee PRs would be stood by the photocopier and licking and sticking envelopes as part of their apprenticeship.

Today it’s a much more contentious piece of literature, treading a fine line between spam, content and useful information sheet. And if the release itself requires a lot of thought, so too does the distribution method. Probably more, in reality, than the release itself, since the average blogger or journalist is more than capable of lifting the information appropriate to them and building on it. Local Media Love

Many SMEs will only have an SEO resource – the money for PR just isn’t there. If they’ve given you free reign to use linkworthy stories, the local media could become your new best friend. I love working with them.

Most local papers have a Toolbar PageRank of between 5 and 6. Given the hours spent working up links from less valuable spaces, it’s an obvious place to branch out. (more…)

PR-Company Supposedly Started Whisper Campaign Against Google

whisper

The world of PR is a strange one. Some might think it is nothing more than sending out a few press releases. It however is a lot more than that. And it also has a dark side to it. PR agencies also are very well versed in lobbying. Trying to get politicians to vote a specific way or trying to get journalists to write about a specific topic. Now that sometimes can get into a grey area. Because the ways to get people to vote or write in a specific direction differ very much.

PR company Burson-Marsteller doesn’t have the best name in the market when it comes to campaigns like this. And it now seems as if they tried to ‘nail’ Google on privacy matters using a so called “whisper campaign” (Wikipedia: “a method of persuasion in which damaging rumors or innuendo are spread about the target”). They tried to get several top media outlets in the US to write news stories and editorials about how Google was invading privacy from Americans using their Social Circle features. (more…)

Double Tall Skinny Non Dairy Social Media To Go Please

I’m sitting in Starbucks, my Blackberry stuffed at the bottom of my enormous handbag so I don’t feel tempted to have a quick look. I usually go to a cafe where they haven’t got ‘free wifi’ to write a blogpost, as I simply get too distracted in the office. Phone calls, emails from clients, ooo just need to read this blogpost, answer this tweet. My life is full of interaction in every shape and form, my job demands it, I need to know what’s going on. But when I write I need to cut it all off, not that my writing is ‘journalist class’ and I need silence to get my creativity out, I’m in Starbucks for goodness sake, couldn’t get more noisy if you tried.

Looking around I pretty much see people from every walks of life; babies, mothers, teenagers (with weird neon painting on their faces, god knows what that’s about), a workman in dirty trousers, a business man and in the corner two “ladies that lunches” both with Prada bags. Starbucks pretty much represents the “main stream”, not in a negative way, to me “main stream” simply means something or someone that appeals to people from all walks of life. So how did Starbucks get so massive, why do people like it so much? Sipping my coffee I’m thinking it can’t possibly be because of the coffee, Costa does far superior coffee! I personally think the success of the massive brand that Starbucks has become is mostly due to; positive association, a brand built with people in mind (And on a different note, timing probably had a lot to do with their success, if you haven’t read “Outliers” by Malcom Gladwell I recommend it). But my point isn’t to analyse Starbucks success, although I realise my initial rambling might suggest just that. What I am interested in is how you target the “main stream”, how you reach the Starbucks audience, and more specifically how you can do that online. (more…)
