7 Things My Girlfriend Taught Me About SEO

No, she doesn’t work in SEO…

I love seeing how my girlfriend uses the internet. I take note of her search methods, the kind of keywords she uses to search, the types of sites she buys from. And of course, I’m frequently called to the computer to “have a quick look” at something mind-blowing.

I see it as a chance to see how “normal” people use the internet, you know, people that don’t live and breathe SEO like we do everyday. So without further ado, here’s a post I’ve been meaning to write for sometime; here’s what Sylvie taught me. (more…)

Hosting Or Posting? What Are The Best Options For Video SEO

youtube

Video content can be a hugely effective method of driving sales and traffic for a brand – but where that traffic goes depends on how the video is hosted, optimised, promoted and shared.  Although video is becoming one of the foremost channels for online marketing, there is still a lot of confusion in terms of how it should be used to the best effect, particularly if the aim of the video is lead generation for the client.

There are, effectively, two ways of hosting a video – on page (self hosted) or off page (posted). You can of course do both, or either, or chop and change the method depending on the audience you want to reach or the impact you want the video to have. Both strategies have their advantages and their disadvantages and a cookie cutter approach isn’t always the best way of utilising video so it pays to know the difference. There are going to be times when you need a bigger audience so posting to a site with a significantly wider (and higher) audience may be the approach that’s taken. There are also videos that are dependent on on-page content so self hosting is the only option that gives you the flexibility and control that is required. Below is an overview of both hosting and posting which should give you a quick and easy guide to both. (more…)

What Website Owners can Learn From Gordon Ramsay

Who doesn’t know British chef Gordon Ramsay. He is well-known around the world, mostly because of his swearing in the kitchen, but also because he has set up many successful restaurants., His fame is mainly based on his television shows like “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares,” and the swear words he uses in these shows.

One show in particular is now running for years with huge success: “Kitchen Nightmares”. In this show he comes into a restaurant, which is usually almost bankrupt and barely attracting any customers, and helps save it.

Watching this show can help you a lot when optimizing your website. Think whatever you want about Ramsay and his swearing, but he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to optimizing a business. And optimizing a business, or restaurant in this matter, is not that different from running a restaurant. Let’s take a look at some lessons we can learn from Gordon Ramsay. (more…)

Optimising or optimizing for videos on YouTube: Greg Jarboe explains

The International Search Summit is a conference which has a focus which you don’t find on many conferences: international, the title already says it. Its amazing how little this subject is addressed on the larger conferences. It made Andy Atkins Kruger, an international search expert, start his own conference.

On the day there were many good speakers addressing all different topics. In the morning we saw Steve Capone of Nokia addressing the different international challenges Nokia faces, followed by a great presentation from Mark Neal from Armagard. The second part of the day saw speakers Anne Kennedy, replacing Shari Turow about Website Usability and Gillian Muessig about search in India.

The one presentation I’d like to highlight here is the presentation by Greg Jarboe. After Bruce Daisley of YouTube opened the afternoon with an overview of YouTubes growth Greg talked about video optimization, a growing profession with the growing number of videos online.
