Are You Managing Your Personal And Brand Online Reputation Accordingly?

WhatDoesTheInternetSayAboutYou

The rapid growth and popularity of the internet and social media has made the world a far smaller place. Gone are the days when organisations were able to hide behind their PR teams – nowadays everything is instant and therefore also international. So what challenges does that imply for us?

Reputation used to be closely linked to word-of-mouth – the most powerful form of marketing even in the digital age. Just think of the last time you wanted to try out a new restaurant – you might have asked friends whether they’ve already had the pleasure to dine there in order to help you with your decision making process. Another very common approach (surprise, surprise) is to simply ‘google’ the product or service of your desire to help you make up your mind. This is exactly where my curiosity comes into the game – do you agree with me if I say reputation is a key factor for consumers looking to make a purchasing decision?

The internet displays a vast amounts of information on brands and individuals that reputation simply doesn’t stem from word-of-mouth solely anymore. Further  factors to take into account are: the ease of the online purchase journey, online communication provided and its speed as well as online advertising taking online reputation to a new level. Reputation management – Shady business or just great SEM?

Reputation management. A part of SEM that few want to admit that they do. Looked upon as shady business. Many thinks it is about removing search results or creating black-hat`ish spam to dominate the SERPs. But is it really shady business? N-O, not if you do it for the right reasons.

Reputation management is all about controlling the top 10 for brand related searches. Because your online reputation = your top 10 in Google. It is almost that simple.

In my opinion, reputation management is smart SEM that most companies (and also all people if you ask me) need to do, bad reputation or not. It is SEM with the goal of avoiding bad search results if, or when, the shit hits the fan. Reputation management is also the work to increase your overall online presence, aka. “traditional SEM”. It is controlling the SERPS for brand related searches, before someone else does it. Reputation management is all about a broad presence of great online content, content so strong and relevant that negative news stories, blog posts or forum threads can`t outrank them for brand related searches. It is what SEO and paid search should be all about; relevance and great content.

With that in mind, here`s my 8 most basic tips for reputation management, that anybody can do. No shady business, just relevant content! (more…)

More Lessons from The Hoxton Hotel’s £1 Sale – April 2011

really-seriously-hoxton-april

As you may remember from January of last year, we took an in depth look at how to integrate online and offline marketing efforts and to do so we used the Hoxton Hotel as a case study. In this case we saw a number of things that the hotel was doing well, and a number of areas in which they could improve. I tried to focus on the benefits of their efforts and the amazing success they have had in taking a (mainly) offline brand and making it work online.

When I heard that there was going to be yet another £1 Room Sale taking place I thought that I would get my snipping tool ready to take some screen shots and see if they have taken to heart any of the lessons from the last sale. The last story was largely upbeat, however I have decided to take a more scrutinizing look at the areas of opportunity on which they are still missing out, as well as some of the failures in the current sale as I found this sale to be more frustrating as a particpant/customer. SES NY 2011: Managing Your Online Reputation

Managing your online reputation was one of the sessions I was looking to most for this conference, with Rhea Drysdale of Outspoken Media, Gary Kibel of Davis & Gilbert Law, Charlie Cole VP of Online at Lucky Brand Jeans and Nick Pavlidas of Arent Fox Law (can you tell that I am relaximng in the press room now, I’m managing to get all my links in and if you’re lucky there’ll be formatting too!)

Having a mix of brand, agency and legal eagles on a panel like this certainly made it a lot more insightful than I was expecyting and there were some great insights came out of the session.
