US Internet Ad Spend Tops 17 Billion with Search still dominating

spend

The US IAB released its half yearly trend figures on Friday which were very good reading for anyone in search marketing. In the first half of 2012 Internet ad spend in the US grew by a remarkable 14% YoY topping 17 Billion for the first time. This is great news for all digital marketers as more budget comes across from the traditional offline channels.

This is even more impressive in the chart below which shows the rapid growth of Internet ad spend since 1996. (more…)

Who Gets The Most +1′s? Daily Mail and Telegraph, Times Not on G+

NYT-on-iPad

It is a dangerous area: taking a look at how many likes, how many tweets or how many +1s a specific website gets and drawing conclusions out of these results. Because, what does it really say about the popularity of those sites?

Searchmetrics decided to take a look at UK newspaper websites and try to figure out which one of them has the most authority. Not just based on one metric, but on several.

Searchmetrics found that despite these having fewer Google+ followers than others the Daily Mail and the Telegraph web sites are more frequently shared. (more…)

Twitter Grows Faster Than Facebook

Facebook-Twitter-growth-emarketer

We recently saw that when it comes to the time spent on social networks Facebook wins. Where Google+ only could ‘grab’ people for an average of 3 minutes, Facebook had users clicking around for six to seven hours. Twitter in that list had 21 minutes, so was way behind Facebook.

Average time spent is an interesting metric, like other metrics it should be taken with the necessary criticism. It should be seen in the light of active users, not number of users and the numbers from Comscore last week didn’t show the mobile users for example.

New numbers can be seen in that light. eMarketer reports that, in the US, Twitter is growing more rapidly than Facebook. (more…)

Pinterest: The Numbers Game

Pinterest-infographic-intro

Pinterest is probably the newest ‘hot’ item on the social web. Whether or not it will stick around time will tell, but the immense amount of new followers I am getting in the past few weeks as well as the traffic it gets us shows for me that there might be potential in the tool.

There have been a few posts, including on our own blog, about what the tool actually does. But marketers also like to look at numbers. How is the usage, what is the traffic and who is using it? These questions are answered in this infographic. (more…)

Almost 1 in 2 Europeans Visit Newspaper Sites

newspaper-feed

The Internet is supposed to be the ‘death’ of the newspapers. Who will buy one in a few years, once it gets printed it is after all, not news anymore.

Newspapers are looking to find different ways to get their business back on track and the Internet is the best place to do that. Comscore numbers show that newspapers are still popular, but then mostly online. Half of Europe’s internet population visits newspaper websites.

The numbers from Comscore show that people still trust newspapers as an’authority’. They might see news on social media first, but they still go to newspaper websites to read more about the specific topics. (more…)

You Think Google+ Loses The Attention? December Saw Biggest Use Ever

google-plus-logo-repeat

Opinions about Google+ differ a lot. Some love it because of all the interaction they are getting there (more comments), others have lost interest all together. Fact is that as a social network it still has a long way to go.

But if you did lose interest because your feed kept showing the same people and you figured others would have lost interest too, you might be wrong. Experian Hitwise, who always checks the numbers, reported a few days ago that Google+ is not suffering at all. On the contrary, at least in the US. The month December 2011 was the “biggest month to date” for Google+. (more…)

Google-Behind-The-Numbers-intro

We all know Google is big. No, make that huge. But how huge are they? Sometimes numbers can say more than words, and if you put those numbers into an infographic we are back to images saying more than words.

Searches on Bing More Successful than on Google

Bing-popular-searches

There has been a lot of discussion about Bing lately. According to some experts Microsoft’s search engine was driving on a dead end street. They were going nowhere and Microsoft should consider selling Bing. But things might not be that bad after all.

Research from Experian Hitwise shows that Bing is not only growing, it is beating Google when it comes to success rates. Where on Google 68% off searches are ‘successful’, on Bing and Yahoo that number was a lot higher: 80 percent of searches. (more…)
