A lot is happening in the world of search and social and as you know State of Search is not a news-reporting site but a site that interprets the news and looks at why something is happening and what that means to you.

That doesn’t mean however we are not interested in the news. In this post we will bring the top stories of what happened last week with links to articles around the web. So you will know what you’ve missed.   (more…)

Facebook rolls out Conversion Measurement for all Advertisers

conversion-tracking-cpm-fb

Facebook is ‘growing’ up and is using the data it has on their users not just for their own purposes anymore, but they are sharing that information, whether it is with Graph Search, or with their advertisers. Yesterday Facebook officially announced that conversion tracking will be rolled out to all advertisers.

Everything off course has its reasons and it seems like Facebook is now really trying to to just be a social network anymore, but it is much more (yes, it was already, it is just speeding that up) taking the route of the advertising network. Yes, just like Google. (more…)

Mobile Represents 20% of Facebook Advertising

facebook-mobile

It has taken Facebook a while and it was one of the concerns when the company went to the stock market but it seems they are finally taking steps when it comes to mobile. Not mobile as in a fantastic application (even though that has improved they still have a long way to go there) but there where it matters most for those interested in the money behind Facebook: advertising. The steps are small, but they are there. Still the desktop is still the biggest thing for Facebook.

Global social marketing platform Kenshoo this week reports that after a research they performed looking at more than two million Facebook ad clicks and conversions they conclude that mobile now represents 20.3 percent of overall Facebook ad spend. (more…)

London Underground Turns 150, Google Doodles It

150th_anniversary_of_the_tube-1010005-hp

Many people will as we speak or this morning have been getting on the London Underground again. On their way to work, from work even, or on their way to friends. It seems like the London Underground has been there forever. And that makes sense: today the London celebrates its 150th birthday. And Google decided to honour the underground.

Most people getting on the underground won’t need a map for that, others do. And the map for the London Underground is famous, it has even been used in art. Google now creates another small piece of art: a London Underground Map, mapping the Google logo in their Google Doodle on Google.co.uk. (more…)

Facebook Nearby: Facebook’s Local Search, Opportunity for Offers

Nearby-featured-2

In the past few years many have discussed the possibility of Facebook going into search. After all, the Social giant has got an enormous user base and has the knowledge of who and what you like so it would be interesting to see if they could give you the right ‘answers’ on your searches.

Many have said that Facebook and search would not work, either because search is ‘a whole different ballgame’ or that people don’t go to Facebook to search, but to interact with their friends. On top of that Facebook has a deal with Bing so the ‘need’ to do search isn’t as big.

But like Google changes, so does Facebook and wherever there lies opportunity they will not hesitate to grab opportunity, as long as it is connected to what the ‘business’ does. And so now we see Facebook getting into “search”, but not as a ‘regular’ search engine, but closely related to that what they were already doing: local search, recommended by friends. And with that it is opening up another channel for their Facebook Offers. (more…)

The Growing (not provided) Problem and Why Google Will Act in 2013

Google-keywords-search-not-provided

Perhaps my boldest prediction for 2013 is that Google will likely be forced to take action over (not provided) and whether or not they opt to pass keyword referrer data from SSL search. My view is that with the percentage of users searching via SSL by default growing consistently (through default adoption by browsers, operating systems, etc.) they will find themselves in a situation whereby either their Premium Analytics product is no longer viable or they will be forced to pass keyword data for organic search referrers the same way they still do for paid.

There are a number of options for how they could address this problem. Below I have outlined the most probable approaches they could take and any risks they may have to take in so doing. With all the buzz going around twitter about the fact that Chrome will be switching to SSL search by default it seemed like a good time to share these thoughts. (more…)

Google Makes Structured Data easy with Data Highlighter

hihglight-data-overview-2

Rich snippets are becoming extremely important in the SERPS these days, some might even argue they are more important than rankings. Because they make you stand out. Whether it’s video, reviews or just the text you want highlighted, everything you can do, you should do.

When it comes to event calendars Google has just made the life of a webmaster a whole lot easier by introducing Data Highlighter for event data which will allow even the most a technical webmasters to mark up structured data about events (think concerts, conferences or festivals). Without touching html. (more…)
