motorola-google

We knew that mobile was going to be huge. We knew that Android was very important to Google. We knew that Google would make some sort of move into mobile sooner or later. But we didn’t expect this move: Google is buying Motorola.

Google is paying $12.5 billion (in cash!) for the handset maker. Google Phones will be rolling out of the Motorola factory pretty soon. (more…)

News near you: local, mobile and personal integrated by Google

news-near-you-intro

Yet again Google has launched a new feature. And again it seems to be part of their bigger strategy which has to lead to a more social like Google: news near you. If you are an Android or iPhone user living in the US you can now go to news.google.com and you will be prompted with a request to share your location. If you accept, “news near you” will be available.

The feature was introduced by Google News Product Manager Navneet Singh. The new service from Google lets you see news from the location your phone tells you where you are. You can personalize it further on the personalization page where you can determine whether you want news on specific topics. (more…)

The growth of mobile search: huge in numbers, not in CTR (research)

mobile_search

It is clear that mobile is not just a growing market, it is a market to really dive into. Mobile is interesting for both search engines and for advertisers. Research performed (in the US!) by Efficient Frontier shows us that the number of mobile searches and mobile paid ads is growing rapidly. But CTR and ROI still stays behind.

Efficient Frontier tells us that already 10-15% of traffic on average comes from mobile devices. And that’s an average, if you look at specific markets these numbers can sometimes even double. The research also shows that 5.4% of all paid search impressions currently come from mobile devices, which is a huge growth compared to last year. This means that by the end of 2011 Efficient Frontier believes that “somewhere between 7.0%-9.5% of search advertising dollars could be spent on mobile devices”. (more…)

Instant previews on mobile searches on Google

instant-previews-mobile

One of Google’s main goals is to do more when it comes to mobile. Not just by getting Android bigger and bigger and gathering data through mobile, also by improving the mobile experience in search.

Yesterday Google has made another step in improving that mobile experience by introducing Instant Previews on the mobile. We already know the Instant Previews from the web, but now you can navigate even faster on mobile also. (more…)

Why Bing will be trailing on Google and why it should hook up with Apple and Facebook

Windows-7-Mobile-Phone

Bing is doing well, at least, in the US it is. The latest numbers by Comscore show us that Bing increased its share of searches by 1.1 percentage points last month and Statcounter noted that Bing had outgrown Yahoo, but was still trailing on Google.

Bing is not sitting still either, with their expansion to France and new additions to their search results like flight auto suggest and more personalized search options with the extension of the like-data in their search results.

So Bing is doing well, I personally also want them doing well, because I believe we could (especially in Europe) use some more competitiveness. Still, I fear that Bing will be trailing on Google for quite a while and might never even ‘catch’ them. Why? The reason lies in the combination of mobile and personal. Let me explain.

Bing starts chase: updates on Maps, Local, Mobile, Travel, Image Search and Facebook

bing-android

If you live in or near San Francisco you can attend a lot of great conferences, gatherings or press events. One place I would have liked to have been this week was the Bing Search Summit.

At the Summit Bing presented a lot, and I mean a lot, of new features. This might be the actual start of the chase Bing is preparing towards Google.

One of the things Bing announced that Facebook likes will become more important in ranking but there are also changes announced on local, Maps, Mobile, Travel and Image Search. (more…)

Mobile web search on Android is the future? 247% increase in UK says yes

Mobile is hot, hotter, hottest. Everybody wants to be on mobile devices. And numbers show us why. Not just the ‘apps’ on smartphones like the iPhone or Android are booming, mobile search also is. I also find myself using mobile search more often these days. When discussing something at a dinner party and wanting to find out something quickly I often take out my phone and do a quick search. And I am not the only one, if we can believe the whitepaper which was conducted by research firm YouGov for the annual Tamar Search Attitudes report. (more…)
