Mobilisation of the Nation

A4U NEW

Consider the world pre- and post- the mobile phone. Consider what changes have taken place just in your individual usage of that device in your pocket. It’s true that consumer confidence for mobile is growing rapidly, just compare mobile adoption rates to that of the Internet.

With the mobile consumer behaviour evolving faster than the mobile environment, simple enhancements to the mobile purchase journey can see great improvements. We are all aware of this as online marketers, but how do we capitalise on this? Below are some key takeaways from the ‘mobilisation of the nation’ session at A4U Expo in London, 2012.

Get Your Mobile Search in Order!

A4U NEW

My highlight talks from day one at A4U were during the session ‘Consumers are Socially Mobile: Get Your Mobile Search in Order’, with State of Search’s very own Bas van den Beld and Shri Sharma of Net Media Planet.

Bas opened the session explaining that we should no longer be talking about ‘the year of mobile’ – we’ve been talking about that since 2007, and mobile is something we should have focused on for years. Smart phone usage has become so ubiquitous, that apparently 36% of young people check social media on a mobile device after sex (a statistic that has existed since 2009!). Mobiles have become a social media enabler – with multi-player apps and games, along with increased access to social networks.

Decision Making with Google’s New Recommendations

Last week Google finally published an official set of recommendations for building smartphone-optimized sites. The recommendations announcement was written by Pierre Far, who announced them during SMX Advanced and had already commented at SMX London a month ago about how responsive Web design was Google’s recommended option to enable an optimized, mobile targeted site.

Because of the impressive growth of smartphone usage is understandable that Google is focusing on smartphones when giving recommendations, as they have been already doing for a while now by introducing a smartphone googlebot at the end of last year, the mobile playbook and our mobile planet -which are mobile usage statistics and trends sites, focusing on smartphones- and the how to go mobile site -with a guide of good practices and criteria to take into consideration when deciding to enable a mobile version-. Location: Fitting it Into the Marketing Mix

SAScon location panel

On the second day of SAScon one of the sessions I definitely wanted to see was the Location panel. Chaired by Dom Hodgson from Emberads with a panel consisting of Laurence O’Toole from Analytics SEO, Netbooster’s Teddie Cowell, Malcolm Maybury from 360spin, and Google’s Chris Johnson.

Local Trends & Ad Solutions

After the obligatory introductions the first presentation is from Chris Johnson, who talks about local trends & ad solutions. According to Chris 1 in 3 mobile searches has a local element. He shows an example of a Las Vegas company who utilised their Google Analytics data to customise their mobile campaigns, resulting in strong improvements in conversions. (more…)

First up is Latitude’s Ben Wightman talking about the latest deveoplments in mobile PPC. There’s a similar growth trend for tablets though it still lags behind smartphones. (more…)

Advanced PPC Techniques

SAScon - Gilli Goodman from Google UK

Next up for me at SAScon is the Advanced PPC panel moderated by Yahoo’s Jon Myers.

Duncan Fisher, Latitude – Quality Score

First speaker is Duncan Fisher from Latitude and he’s talking about Quality Score (QS). The Quality Score of your keywords is a vital aspect of your AdWords campaign, ensuring only the most relevant ads are shown on Google’s search results. It’s a ‘complex mathematical formula’ scoring the relevance of your ad & landing page to the keyword you advertise on. From the advertiser’s point of view it helps determine how much you end up paying per click. (more…)
