Will Windows 8 change the search engine landscape?

Over the last couple of years we have seen the search engine landscape take a significant turn. Both the major players – Bing and Google – have increasingly turned scaled their mobile/tablet hardware options. Google in particular have been hugely successful with the launch of a number of hugely successful range of tablets using the Google tablet operating systems and the recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

Recently also we have seen Microsoft come to the table with a more serious competitor to the Apple and Android based alternatives – and one which has started to see fruition in the market with Microsoft now providing a serious alternative to Blackberry maker RIM in particular (recent figures – September 2012- suggest market share may be as high as 10.4%. The Fallacy of the “Don’t Rely on Google” Argument

Every time Google decides to deliver another collective bitch-slap to the SEO industry in the form of an update named after a cute monochrome animal, we see the usual eruptions of debate and arguments among SEOs about the hows and whys of it all.

One argument that is consistently put forth, usually by smug SEOs whose sites have escaped the sledgehammer of Google’s wrath unscathed, is that “no site should be too reliant on Google’s traffic”.

That particular argument grinds my gears to no end. It really does. In my opinion it’s just not a valid argument. (more…)

The State of The Search Engines: Google vs Bing vs Yahoo

There were days in which we could actually talk about a “War on Search Engines”. Google was fighting the likes of Yahoo, Altavista, MSN and even Ask for the trust of the users. We can now easily say Google has won that war. They are the biggest one out there.

At least, they are for now. Google knows they shouldn’t sit still and wait and see what will happen. They have to keep developing and make things better, otherwise others will happily take their position. Even though the ‘war is over’ it is nice to take a bit of a closer look at these market share differences, where they lie and where to come from. (more…)

Bing calls Google Names but does Gain Some Market Share

Bing and Google will probably never be best friends. The two biggest ‘official’ search engines got into a fight several months ago when Bing allegedly copied Google’s search results. Ever since the tension between the two has been there. Google will probably remain the biggest for a while, but Bing is closing in on Google according to the latest numbers.

It is not those numbers however but a Bing “Easter Egg” which got the most attention this weekend. A Googler noted that Bing had been hiding some interesting results which seemed to be a ‘pinch’ towards Google on specific searches.

Software engineer Andy Arnt found two results which seemed to have a negative message to Google inside the search results. A search for “more evil than satan himself” returned the results “10^100“, while “Hiybbprqag” gave back “hiybbprqag (orcish) = whiner (common)“. (more…)

Searches on Bing More Successful than on Google

There has been a lot of discussion about Bing lately. According to some experts Microsoft’s search engine was driving on a dead end street. They were going nowhere and Microsoft should consider selling Bing. But things might not be that bad after all.

Research from Experian Hitwise shows that Bing is not only growing, it is beating Google when it comes to success rates. Where on Google 68% off searches are ‘successful’, on Bing and Yahoo that number was a lot higher: 80 percent of searches. (more…)

Bing now also fastest growing in the UK. Google, Facebook drop slightly

Last week I spoke at an internal event of a big company and afterwards I was talking to somebody who said to me “That Bing thing, that is never gonna make it right?”. I then replied that I thought it was gonna make it, but that in The Netherlands it simply wasn’t there yet in its full potential, but in the US it had already grown to a 30% market share.

Now slowly Bing seems to be also taking a bit of a bigger piece of the pie in the UK. According to Hitwise they are now the fastest growing search engine in the UK. (more…)

Bing keeps growing in the US: now 30% marketshare

We cannot longer be ignoring Bing as a major competitor in the search market, at least when we are looking at the US that is. According to Hitwise Bing now has over 30% market share there.

In the last month Bing gained almost 2% market share growing from 28.48% in February to 30.01% in March. It’s rival Google lost about the same share and went from 66.69% to 64.42%. Bing’s partner in crime Yahoo also so a rise: Yahoo powered searches went from 14.99% to 15.69%. (more…)

Will Bings TV campaign make an impact on search market share?

Microsoft announced on Monday that they are to launch a multi-million pound TV campaign for Bing to challenge Google’s dominance within the UK. The first ad is now available on Youtube.

The opportunity for Bing

Steve Ballmer recently said that their approach is to “take a little here and there” from the search giant but they are clearly taking the UK market very seriously indeed. Who can blame them, the UK is the only country in the world where online ad spend exceeds TV and with 60% of that currently being spent on paid search the opportunity is immense. (more…)
