Who To Take out to Lunch? The Importance of Knowing the Network

dinner

You can safely say that internet marketing in general is going through an important shift. The rules are being changed, the focus is changing. It seems as if finally marketeers start to understand that they are not just there to spit out messages to as many people as possible, hoping someone will pick it up. They are starting to realise they are working with humans. And Social Media and Search are playing a big role in this shift.

Of course the changes Google (and Bing as well) are currently making to how they work are playing a big role in the mindset of the users. Implementing the authorship markup and connecting social accounts to search results and personalising search as a whole are important elements that make marketers think more personal than they were used to in the past decade.

With this change it becomes more important to know who it actually is you are targeting. Which person is influential in a certain topic and even more important, who is connected to that person. Some online marketing tools act on that as well. Linkdex was the first to implement authorship in their tool. They gave you a nice overview of who writes about what topic, giving you an indication of where your targeting should go. But as Matt Roberts, the brains behind Linkdex, said in Iceland last week: that is just a list. We want to know a lot more. As Roberts puts it: we want to know who to take to lunch. (more…)

How To Find The Influential Authors: Linkdex Made it Easy

author-ego

With search marketing and social marketing changing from being a channel to send out your message through to channels that help you let others do the talking for you authors are playing a bigger role every day. And I am not talking about authors who write books, but those who write about specific niches, in some cases you could call them bloggers ;-) .

With this change it is also becoming more important to get a grip on these and trying to get a hold of them. Some might call that good old fashioned PR. Finding specific bloggers in your niche can be hard, I’ve written about that before. But help is on the way. Linkdex developed a feature which will make the life of those trying to find and get in touch with these authors much easier. A feature also which got a special commendation at the UK Searchawards last week. And the lucky blogger I am, I had the opportunity to test it out for a period of time. (more…)

Geolocation: Brett Tabke (Pubcon) about Local Differences

Brett Tabke has been around in the search industry for a very long time, going back to Webmasterworld in the old days up to his current ‘job’ as organizer of Pubcon. Last week he was suddenly part of an illustrious panel at SES San Francisco together with the likes of Mike Grehan and Danny Sullivan in the chat with Matt Cutts.

Away from the crowds I talked to Tabke about his experiences when it comes to differences in local search, geolocation and international search, the topics on which I interviewed several people last week. Find below his thoughts.

Give us Your Restaurant Results in San Francisco!

SES San Francisco is coming up next week and I will personally be there for several reasons. First of all I will be making videos there, together with our friends from Linkdex. But I will not just be there for State of Search, but also as one of the ‘experts’ on the Roundtable forums. I will be talking there about international search and differences in international SEO.

So you can see that the ‘theme’ for SES San Francisco in my case is very much focussed on international differences, Geo location, something Pete Young talked about yesterday as well. And for that I would like your help, to make something really nice for SES San Francisco. (more…)

How Big is the Geo-Opportunity?

compass

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to speak at the launch of Linkdex’s new georanking tool. A number of other people from other agencies such as MEC, Razorfish and Mediacom (my London counterpart) were also there , and it was a good opportunity to discuss the impact of geo-rankings within the SEO community.

Prior to the launch, Linkdex had done a significant amount of research for the launch comprising around 2000 keywords and phrases across 8 locations. For those not aware of what much of this concerns, the launch by Google of Venice which geo-targeted results based on user location factors was the major factor behind Linkdex launching this tool – and its something I have felt has had a significant factor across a number of terms across Retail and FMCG. The net result of this has been the greater breakout of Local Places (Local+) results and a much greater bias of results where local factor or intent can be determined. (more…)

Linkdex Adds Ranking Checks For Baidu, Yandex & more

ranking-set-up-international-search-engines

Every SEO wants to check his rankings. Even though the world of search is changing, rankings still play a big role when it comes to the everyday job of the SEO. Yes, we have Universal Results, yes, Search Plus Your World is playing a huge part in our visibility, but rankings still are an important relative key performance indicator.

And with the ever internationalizing world of search (we can see how important internationalization has become by all the great content coming from the International Search Summit last week for example), we want to know how we do in different part of the world, on different search engines, not just Google.

Linkdex has understood the importance of the combination of the both and has added Baidu, Yandex and Yahoo to the list of search engines you can track your rankings. It has also added language options, which means you can check these search engines in over 35 countries in multiple languages. (more…)

What is SEO, Matrix Style

Matrix-data

Last week we announced “Watch Zeus”, a special action by Linkdex to not only get you to SES New York, but which could also earn you $250 and eternal fame. The intention is that you enter a script which will then be animated by Linkdex. Cool stuff and you should check it out.

While waiting for all the entries Linkdex already decided to make one of their own called “What is SEO”. Now that title is not that exiting, what is exciting is the original script idea: the Matrix. Enjoy.
