Linkdex review: a tool as your new SEO assistant

Linkdex-dashboard

At SES London I talked to the team of Linkdex. They wanted to show me their new tool. To be really honest: many people want to show me what they’ve built so they hope I will blog about it. In some cases I get pleasantly surprised in other cases it is hard for me to hide from those who want free promotion for a sucky tool. In this case that was different. It became clear very quickly that Linkdex had built something which could be very useful for many search marketers out there.

Linkdex offered me the opportunity to play with the tool for a while. I found that the tool is very useful and has a lot of potential. Below you can read my findings and review of the tool. At the end of the review you can sign up to be one of 50 to try out the tool. (more…)

Linkdex to announce game-changing feature: link “Timeline” shows latest link efforts

Linkdex-logo

There is a new tool in town. In the past few months Linkdex has been slowly but surely conquering the search world. And they’ve been surprising SEOs around with their functionalities. I myself got the opportunity to play with the tool and will post an extensive review on that tomorrow.

The people from Linkdex however also gave me an opportunity to get a sneak preview of their newest feature. And I was impressed enough to make a small post about that here. Linkdex will be offering a feature which will allow you to see which links were build in the a specific period. This means you will be able to for example see how your competitor is doing or how hard your agency is working for you. (more…)

Link Analysis tools: SEO Spyglass (Link Assistant) – any good?

link-assistant-screen

Increasingly we are seeing a burgeoning industry in SEO tools coming into the marketplace, as we see the SEO industry mature into an ever increasing part of the marketing communications mix. In particular link analysis is a fundamental part of many search engine marketing organisations armouries – and this is increasingly becoming a battleground as the likes of Majestic SEO, SEO Moz (+Open Site Explorer) and more recently other tools such as Search Metrics have become entered the market – symbolic perhaps that the industry has come along way since the days of many of us using Yahoo Site Explorer (whooooo!!!)

One of the organisations trying to make a move into this space is that of SEO SpyGlass – Link Assistant, a company who have been around since 2004 – and whose flagship product link-assistant.com was released ‘way back’ in 2005. The latest tool has come a long way since those early days , and I was given an opportunity by Bas to review the latest release of SEO Spyglass. (more…)

Bloggergate: a true story about link buying and surreptitious advertising

Today I would like to share a little news story with you. I know we are not a newsblog ( we just got a news section though!) but I think this news is good food for an interesting discussion. I’m talking about a “scandal” in Germany, also known as “Bloggergate”.

So what happened? On the 21st of january Sascha Pallenberg, author of the blog netbooknews.de, published a tweet saying he got some interesting secret documents which will cause a “Tsunami” in the German blogosphere. In perfect Wikileaks-style he said that he will “review the material” and publish it later.

SEO Tools 101: Linkbuilding – Finding Targets the Old Fashioned Way

Shortcuts

I may be going a little old school with this post but sometimes all the tools in the world are no substitute for a little manual digging, imagination and research.

There are some amazing tools out on the market these days and I’m a fan of an automation or two but I do think it’s too easy to rely on a tool and lose some really valuable potential link goldmines because you’re not looking in the right place. Sometimes it takes a little search engine elbow grease.

I know it should be a basic but it’s so crucial, it should also be revisited. (more…)

Lessons Link Builders Can Learn From England’s Bungled World Cup 2018 Bid

russia-blatter-bid

Despite the best lobbying efforts of our biggest sporting star, a newly engaged king-to-be and our Prime Minister England failed miserably in their attempts to gain the right to host the 2018 World Cup, I’ll leave the discussion on they whys and the wherefores to the better qualified; what interested me was how convinced everyone seemed to be of the success of the bid despite its impending failure. I don’t think this was naive wishful thinking but the kind of self deceit that often affects un-successful link builders.

So what can we learn from the disastrous bid to help us become better link builders.

Predictions for 2010, how did we do?

2010-predictions

First of all: Happy New Year! I hope 2011 will be the best year we have all ever seen.

2011 has started. It’s the first Monday of the New Year and many of us are starting the New Year fresh with good resolutions. And a new year also means you can get yourself (mentally) ready for a lot, and I mean a lot, posts on almost every site predicting the future of search and social in 2011. After all, every self-respecting blog is making these predictions.

Why? Well for one because its ‘easy’ content, secondly it might be a link worthy article (I’m linking to many of them in this post) and third, it’s always fun to look into a Crystal Ball and predict the future.

The thing is with these posts, hardly anyone dares to look at them again 12 months after they were published. How did we do in the predictions? Did we really have an idea of what was going to happen? Or did the industry caught us by surprise? Time to take a look. Note: I can’t talk about every prediction made out there, there were too many, but I collected some interesting ones. (more…)

UK OFT Judgement Could Have Impact On Linkbuilding

In an interesting development that could have wide-ranging repercussions for UK linkbuilders, the UK’s Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has taken action against a company (Handpicked Media) that paid bloggers to write promotional blog posts, comments, and tweets.

While writing promotional material is not misleading in and of itself, what the OFT did have a problem with was that these posts/comments/tweets did not include a statement that they were paid for. The OFT concluded that this was misleading and against the Consumer Protection Act.

Why your Link Strategy Should Involve Guest Blogging and Tips for Success

Guest Blogging is hardly front page news, yet does this mean it shouldn’t be at the forefront of your link strategy?

Nichola Stott, one of our fellow State of Search members, examined the ratio of brand versus keyword anchor text in her study over at Search Engine Watch. After reading this post it really reinforced the importance of guest blogging as a tool to manipulate a link profile. Now, when I say manipulate, I don’t simply mean for exact anchor text, but for brand, phrase and synonyms. I will go over this reason a bit later. Guest blogging is the perfect way to gain control over your link graph as you can decide; who you want to target (geographic location of the site as well as industry), where they link (link placement) and also how they link (anchor text)

Avoiding Link Devaluation -#ProSEO Seminar 2010

My last live blog of the excellent Distilled information-laden conference is on Patrick Altoft  of Branded 3′s presentation about his experience of Google link devaluation and how to avoid this. His focus is on link building efficiency, as he believes the majority of people just don’t realise how many links Google devalues.

Buying Links

Don’t buy links unless you are 100% sure it’s safe. Think about it: most text link brokers actually have Google Analytics on their site so Google knows exactly what they’re doing! (more…)

Link Building in Competitive Niches – #ProSEO Seminar 2010

As Ayima’s Jane Copland explains, her talk focuses on: “the biggest link building issues you can face in competitive markets, and their solutions”. She runs through some common problems and questions:

What sort of links do I need?

No two industries are alike, the rules change. It’s not necessarily about Google treating industries differently, it’s about who’s competing in them. You don’t need to understand what’s working for everyone else, you need to focus on what is going to work for what you want to rank for. (more…)
