International and Multilingual sites: The Criteria to Establish an SEO Friendly Structure

intro-international-multilingual

Although many articles have been written about international and multilingual SEO I would like to dive deeper in the decision making process and the relevant criteria to select the most suitable structure depending on the site business, geolocalization and language goals, requirements and restrictions.

After having managed a certain amount of international SEO processes I’m convinced that if the site owners would have known the most important criteria from the beginning and understood the consequences of their first site internationalization decisions they would have taken them more seriously, probably would have chosen a different option, ended with a much more cost-effective, SEO friendly structure… and I would have had a much easier job afterwards :) (more…)

Baidu About To Conquer South America: The Market To Be

conquerer-ship

There is one continent which in history has been conquered many times: South America. From Columbus to Hernando Cortes, they all set foot in South America and found it to be a place where they could take a lot from.

The voyages of discovery were all about the money. Now South America is about to be conquered again, and again money will be the number one reason why. This time however the conquerers do not come from Europe, they are coming from China. Search Engine Baidu two weeks ago announced they would be opening offices in Sao Paolo. (more…)

How to Leave your Job, the Country and Survive

sam-murray-lizzard

I am writing this in a flat, with food in my belly and water on tap, instead of a cave with a month long beard and nothing but a rattlesnake for company, so I guess in essence I have survived. And in doing so, I guess I am qualified enough to give some advice if you are thinking of moving to another country to work.

I decided to up sticks and move to Australia in October last year. I always wanted to work abroad and I felt with the job we do it was a perfect opportunity.  Sometimes I feel we don’t appreciate how good our industry is in this sense; not many people can work remotely, or work in an industry as flexible as ours and it took moving abroad for me to realise how fortunate we are.

There are certain questions that need to be answered before and after you move.  In fact, depending on your initial choices there are questions and challenges at every stage, but instead of looking at them as a hardship the right mindset should see them as opportunities. (more…)

International SEO: A few thoughts on the topic of best practice

Title-300x300

As you may have read in Jackie’s excellent summary post on the International Search Summit, I spoke there last week on all things international and SEO. I thought I’d jot down a few of my own personal thoughts for you lucky State of Search readers in the wake of this. This is predominately on one topic. It’s a beauty.  Disclaimer: these are my opinions not the truth!

Wrap Up of the International Search Summit – ISS London 2011

iss-logo

The International Search Summit took place in London at the British Library on November 24th 2011. Having been to ISS New York earlier in the year, I thought it would be hard to top , but the UK session surpassed expectations with not only an impressive line up, but high level delegates from the world of international search.

Each session one was a gem in it’s own right. If you haven’t yet booked on to an ISS I recommend it, as it could just give you an insight into strategy that you may not be using for your less global campaigns. (more…)

Killer Search Operator Tactics for the Social Marketer

iss-logo

The International Search Summit took place in London on Thursday at the British Library. I was due to write a full wrap up but there was so much great content, that many sessions deserve a post of their own.

This particular session was without a doubt one of the stand outs not only because it was presented by the awesome Marty Weintraub but the information presented came from an aimClear study of 7 Search Engines, 45 social media platforms and various countries for actionable SEO insights that has not even been published yet. How well does Google Translate really work?

Google Translate can be a handy tool. But to be honest, a lot of the times the translations you get back can be really really crappy. But it is getting better, that is true. Still in my opinion Google Translate is there for the quick interpretation, knowing what something is about, not for the actual translations itself. If you optimize a website do not use Google Translate to translate a story and put that on your site. You will not get the right text, I can assure you that.

Still, this video below shows a nice way of how Google Translate can work. And apparently it does work for ordering Indian food! Then again, I can’t really check, because I don’t speak Indian. Still, its a nice video :) .

Andy Atkins Kruger: “everything that’s written about Yandex from an SEO perspective is wrong”

Andy Atkins Kruger knows all about international search. And so he knows all about Yandex. The Russian Search Engine is growing rapidly and is doing some pretty interesting things there. At SMX Advanced Rand Fishkin made a special ‘Whiteboard Friday’ with Andy talking about Yandex. And Andy decided to give us some very valuable insights into Yandex.

Yet Another Index? Making an Impact in Russa – International Search Summit 2011 #SMXISS

Next up is Preston Carey, Business Development Director at Yandex, giving us an insight into the Russian search engine. Firstly an introduction and some context around the Russian market.

Markets in the developed countries are not really growing very much anymore, the two places that are booming are Russia and Asia. Russia is the seventh largest market in terms on internet users, sitting just behind Germany. Russia only has 43% internet penetration at the moment but it is growing hugely year-on-year so could easily be taking over Germany within the next 18 months. (more…)
