Can Social Media Activity Boost Rankings?

testing-social-signals-intro

Don’t we all want an answer to the question whether or not social media activity indeed boosts organic search ranking? So far its been a lot of guessing and that will probably continue to be so for a while.

Some have tested things, like for example yesterday Branded3 published the results of an interesting study they did. Another who tried to figure it out was Tasty Placement, who created 6 similary-sized US websites in 6 different cities. They tried to capture the average change in rankings when promoting on different social media channels.

The results you can see in the infographic below. According to them Google+ gave them the most ranking boost, even though the numbers are low. (more…)

Can We Still Trust Google?

Can-I-Trust-Google-intro

If there is one thing people are focussing on with Google in the past few years it is not their social efforts with Google+, it is not their improved search results with all the Panda Updates or the entry of Universal Search. What is it people are focussing on? It is whether or not Google still can hold on to the motto “Do No Evil”.

This motto has haunted Google more than it has benefitted them so it seems. Maybe there are days that Brin and Page wish they had never thought of that motto in the first place, because with every mistake they make when it comes to privacy or Google’s dominance people point at that specific motto.

The question off course is: is it true? Is Google still “no evil” or have they ‘gone to the darkside’? Can we still trust Google? That is a question which is tried to be answered in this infographic. What do you think? (more…)

Looking At UK SEO Agencies: Or Should We Say “Digital Marketing Agency”?

SEO-Agency-101-intro

When it comes to SEO industries one of the leading countries without a doubt is the UK. There are many high level agencies in the UK and the developments are going very rapidly there.

Whether or not the UK industry is much better or worse than other countries is hard to say, not just because it is difficult to look at specific agencies, but also because the environment can be different in each country.

Still, you can try and look to the UK by looking at the numbers. Numbers that show that the UK SEO industry is not just focussing on SEO anymore, but also heavily involved in Social Media and Web Analytics for example. Or that most agencies have a blog. And that the good old fashioned “SEO Agency” seems to be replaced, as a name that is, by “Digital Marketing Agency”. This infographic sums it up. (more…)

WordPress: A Global Phenomenon

WordPress-Stats-Infographic-intro

State of Search runs on WordPress. As do 72.4 million other websites. That is 53.8% of all sites using a content management system. These are quite impressive numbers. But there are a few more impressive stats when it comes to WordPress.

Joost de Valk (Yoast) decided to make a plugin out of the statistics he could collect about the tool on which he has made several very successful plugins. That infographic results in a very impressive list of facts about this CMS, truly a phenomenon: WordPress FTW! (more…)

Facebook vs Google: What The People Say

online-global-perspective

So who is more popular: Google or Facebook? And are they going to compete not just on Social but also on search? Jeroen wrote a great post about it yesterday. We can think and argue about this for a long time and still wouldn’t get an answer.

But in the end it is the user who decides. And what does the user say? The statistics below show us that if you look world wide, there is only one brand who wins it now. But will that change? What do you think? (more…)

Pinterest has many reasons for existing. First of all it’s a bookmarking service, second of all its fun and we all know marketers have found it a very interesting tool while some think its great for SEO (not everyone agrees there).

Do We Need A Social Networking Bill of Rights?

Social-Networking-Bill-of-Rights-intro

When it comes to Social Media there is a lot of talk about privacy: what are the boundaries, how far can we go? Can employers base their judgements on what we publish online? Can companies just connect all sorts of different data?

The website backgroundcheck.org feels it might be time for some rules on this. Not just ‘any’ rules though, an actual ‘Bill of Rights’. They made this infographic to explain… What do you think, do we need a social networking Bill of Rights? (more…)

Social vs Search: And The Winner Is…

social-vs-search-infographic-intro

Which one is better: Social or Search? To be honest, it is not a fair question. Maybe we should even say they don’t compare or they need to go together.

Still MDG Advertising thinks it is interesting to compare them, to see how they ‘weigh in’. And they are right, it is interesting. Which one is better for lead generation, what is better for brand awareness, local visibility or interactivity? All elements looked at in the infographic below.

And the winner is… (more…)

The Difference In Users Between Google+ and Facebook

facebook-gplus-diff-intro

Google’s TV Ad in the UK was launched this weekend. It was clearly aimed at getting more users for Google+. But as someone stated in the comments of our Facebook page, who was it targeted at? Young or old users? And wouldn’t people who see it think “hey that’s Facebook?”. But Facebook and Google+ have different type of users.

For those who don’t know the difference between the users, students from the Fox School of Business made this infographic to explain the difference. (more…)

Google Algorithm Changes in One View

Google-Algorithm-Changes-intro

Google makes constant changes, over 500 a year. Not all of them are algorithmic (thank heaven), but some of the major ones are. It can be difficult keeping track of all of them. Here however is another overview of all the big algorithmic changes Google has made in the past 14 years.

We have seen similar overviews, but the overview that Outrider has made of the Google Algorithm Changes since the start of Google in 1998 until now is the best so far. (more…)
