TopSEOs: Kill The Hypocrisy, It’s Time To Take a Stand

turn-our-back-1

Disclaimer: Just to make sure there’s no confusion, the opinions expressed here are mine and mine alone and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of State of Search or any of its affiliates, etc etc.

Now, with that out of the way, cue the rage.

Yesterday a press release, uncritically regurgitated by The Drum, made the rounds on various social media platforms. It concerned a company’s “number one UK SEO company” ranking, as awarded by none other than TopSEOs.

Aside from the editorial blunder of publishing this drivel, there are massive levels of fail in evidence here. Anyone in the SEO industry who can rub more than two braincells together knows that TopSEOs is a scam (as should be evident from the links provided later in this post). (more…)

A Perspective on the SEO Industry

SEO-Industry-Survey-intro

A very interesting infographic today, all about the search industry. This infographic was created by Datadial.net based on a Twitter survey they performed a few weeks ago.

They asked 22 questions about working in SEO, from where the SEOs are based to ‘do you buy links’ and “Have you ever had a site penalized?”. The results are made into this infographic. A very nice way of doing a survey and presenting the results. (more…)

To Build or not to Build

nesbitt-logo

This is a guest post by Richard Shove, who is SEO Specialist at OMD UK. Richard has a strong opinion on the industry and wanted to share his view on whether or not we should all be learning code to become a good SEO.

Before I get started, I apologise in advance as this post may initially come across a little negative. It’s not intended to offend or criticize, I’m Scottish and it’s in my nature to be sarcastic and angry. Bear with me though, there is a meaning to the rant.

Is Microsoft Going For A Second Attempt to Buy Yahoo?

microhoo_logo

When Carol Bartz was fired in a way the “Bold and the Beautiful” writers could have thought of immediately rumors started about Yahoo possibly being up for sale. So far there is no official news around that, but now there are rumors that Yahoo’s partner in crime when it comes to search, Microsoft, might be considering a new attempt to buy Yahoo.

In 2008 Microsoft also tried to buy Yahoo bidding up to an amount of 44.6 billion dollars in a hostile take over attempt. That take over then was prevented and Yahoo and Microsoft found each other in a special search deal with Bing. (more…)

One of the most important and difficult questions when starting a career is deciding where to work. In SEO choosing a good first role is essential as it will form the basis of what you will learn and what sort of work you will be exposed to.

As the process can be a bit difficult and just about every SEO company is hiring at the moment (or at all times it seems) I thought it would be worth leaving a few tips to new entries into the community or people thinking about a career change. (more…)
