Google Now Warning You of Duplicate Content in Webmastertools

Webmaster-Tools-Messages

Google is working on improving Webmastertools. There seems to be more integration with for example Google Analytics and they are delivering more ‘service’ to website owners by handing them information they didn’t ask for.

Yesterday Google announced the latest improvement in that. They are now warning site owners if Google thinks a page is considered to be duplicate content and therefore not showing up in the search results. (more…)

Google Puts A Limit On Google Maps API, Bad News for Travel?

maps-google-london

It looks as if Google is (partly) changing the way they are making money. Where before they made money by advertising or sponsored items in their specific products (think for example the sponsored listings in local), they now are charging for products or usage of API.

Where the launch of the paid version of Google Analytics and the according to some related ssl-issue already gave people some topics to talk about, Google now has announced it will be monetizing yet another one of their products: starting January 1 2012 Google will be putting a limit on the free usage of the Google Maps API. Ouch Google: Random Sites appearing as popups in Google Analytics

google-analytics-privacy-issue-intro

Things at Google are not really going smoothly at the moment so it seems. There is lots of talk about privacy, Google not living up to their mantra (don’t be evil) and they are looked at with a lot of critical sight.

The finding which Col Skinner (aka @SEOSherlock) did and which was ‘broken’ on the 3 Door Digital website by Alex Moss sure will not help. Google seems to have made a huge mistake in Google Analytics which could have major privacy consequences. Clicking on a link in the exit pages overview opens up a random domain. (more…)

Has Google+ missed the boat?

ark-missedtheboat

I was involved in the State of Search radio show this Tuesday night with Bas and Roy, something I have been fortunate to have been involved with on a number of occasions. During the conversation, we got onto the subject of Google+ something which has had a lot of noise over the last couple of weeks for a number of reasons not limited to Google engineers venting with others outlining the perceived decline in Google+ takeup over recent months.

I have to say, I was one of those that was very exciting at the thought of Google+. My personal thoughts are that the hangouts and Huddles are a great idea – yet something stops me from fully engaging with the product. I know I am not the only one – talking to many colleagues and industry peers it is clearly apparent that take off isn’t what many of us thought it would be – and the general public appear to be of a similar perception. I should add at this point that I am not saying Google+ is on its last legs – just that it certainly isn’t fulfilling its potential. (more…)

The video From The New GMail Google Didn’t Want Us to See

Google didn_t want us to see the new GMail...-1

Google is re-designing Gmail. I think many of you might even already have the new design working because you opted in for the beta-version. I know I do. It looks really nice and works pretty nice also.

The redesign however is just part of what Google is planning to do with Gmail. They are adding some features which are not even in the beta version which is currently available.

Last week Google accidentally put a video online introducing the new Gmail. That wasn’t supposed to happen. If look for to the video now you won’t find it. Copies were taken offline on YouTube. Users who had a copy on YouTube were seen as copyright violators. (more…)

Isn’t Online Shopping Supposed To Be Easy?

Online shopping, everybody does it these days. Because it’s a lot simpeler than going to the store, right…? In some cases it isn’t. And as a site owner you should look at how your customers behave on your site. Where do they ‘check out’? That is the message in this commercial video by Google to promote Google Analytics.

An Interview With the Search Quality Alliance

search-quality-alliance

What would you do if you worked for Google, left and started your own business? You would probably focus on that business and would try to get as much out of it as possible, even using the knowledge you had build up at Google.

So when Six former Googlers from the Search Quality announced they were joining together in something called the “Search Quality Alliance” many immediately thought this was about making money. And using their Google background to do so. It is not. They decided “to share their expertise and evangelize successful White Hat search engine optimization in the search industry”. For free, because they feel it is their duty.

We talked to the team containing of six ex-Googlers from five different countries and with a lot of European focus and asked them about their initiative. (more…)

Top 10 Salaries At Google

top-10-salaries-at-google-intro

We’ve seen infographics before about how to get a job at Google. We’ve seen video’s of the Google Plex and other Google offices, so we know the benefits of working at Google and we know how to get there.

But what does a job at Google pay? Not many will tell, but Jobvine did find out something and made an overview of the top 10 salaries at Google. Not surprisingly (lead) software engineers make more money than marketing directors or managers. (more…)

How Google is pushing Google+ in your face

google-plus-one-1-button-sites

Google Plus is here, and whether you like it or not, it is here to stay. Everything points in the direction that Google has taken up Plus as being the core of their ‘new way of working’. Google Plus is their “New Pagerank”.

Google Plus is the core for all the data Google gathers about its users. With that data they will try to make the internet as personal as possible. I’ve explained this right after the launch of Google Plus.

But for Google to get that data and to make that data as valuable as possible they need people to use Plus, or at least to take notice of Google Plus. And even though the number of registered users is high, the activity still seems low. So Google is doing everything in their power to push Plus right into our faces. And that pushing is an indication of what is coming. (more…)
