Five Reasons Why SEOs Should Legitimately Be Scared of Google

Am I the only one who is starting to think Google might have it in for SEOs? I’ve never been one of the tin foil hat brigade who thought the posse up at mountain-view have always been out to get the search industry, but these five recent events have lead me to start to think otherwise.

plus-badge-red

Impact of SSL Search

State-of-search-notprovided-1

Google has introduced encrypted search per 17th of October. It rolled out initially on google.com

The introduction of this so called ‘making search more secure‘ strategy caused quite a stir and ongoing discussion takes place here, here and in our own State of Search podcast here.

At the beginning the impact seemed to be in the single digit numbers being about 2%-3%. Last week I started to notice a dramatic increase on these numbers, so I decided to do some historical reporting on the percentiles. (more…)

Is Google A Monopoly?

google-monopoly-intro

The game Monopoly is about one thing: get as much property as you can. Make sure nobody can beat you and make sure that you will earn the most money. In ‘real’ business however that is not allowed. If you become too powerful, they will try to stop you.

Microsoft has had accusations of being a monopolist and now Google is also under fire. But are they really? This infographic might give you an idea. (more…)

intro-test-info

Another Google Test has been spotted. The preview-section which Google uses on the right hand site of results in the SERPS, is in this test used for a different kind of information: sources.

Meanwhile Google also consists on pushing their own products, especially Google+ and YouTube. There is some nice integration of Plus and Google being rolled out. (more…)

Update: Google Indexing Facebook Comments. Confirmed by Matt Cutts (Google)

Facebook-comment-Scoble

Update: Google’s Matt Cutts has confirmed that Google is indexing the comments (see below).

Google seems to be indexing Facebook comments which are used on blogs. The Facebook Comments are setup using Javascript and iFrames which usually should prevent it from being indexed. The website Labnol.org however found some comments on TechCrunch which are indeed being indexed.

Some tests show however that not every comment is being indexed. So far we can see that the profiles that are indexed at least have to be open to the public and permit subscriptions. But even then not every comment is indexed. (more…)

Google Now Warning You of Duplicate Content in Webmastertools

Webmaster-Tools-Messages

Google is working on improving Webmastertools. There seems to be more integration with for example Google Analytics and they are delivering more ‘service’ to website owners by handing them information they didn’t ask for.

Yesterday Google announced the latest improvement in that. They are now warning site owners if Google thinks a page is considered to be duplicate content and therefore not showing up in the search results. (more…)
