I act on impulse and I go with my instincts – Applying Ramsay logic to SEO

quote4-big

I like most Mondays after football sat watching Channel 4′s Gordon Ramsays Kitchen Nightmares. For those that don’t watch this – particularly the US version its well worth a watch if not to revel in some US loving for the evening. Its not often I watch these programmes and can relate back to SEO but for some reason last nights episode seem to relate back to SEO – particularly in the light of recent changes to SEO.

What I am referring to is the barrage of Google updates which SEO’s have had to deal with over the course of the last 12 to 24 months. In that time, SEO has changed immeasurably – some would say for the worse, but when one surveys the SEO is approached certainly at an agency level, one can only say these changes have been for the positive. There’s no doubting snake oil still exists – and one would certainly be foolish to think that bad SEO doesn’t exist but in terms of a more mature approach to marketing things are certainly better than they have ever been – If only Google would work out accountability doesn’t just apply to channels which provide Google with revenue. UPDATE: Fixed: Google Webmaster Tools Bug Re-verifies Old Accounts

GWT-2

It seems as if there is a bug in Google Webmaster Tools at the moment. Several webmasters were yesterday suddenly seeing sites to which their access was revoked show up again in Google Webmasters. Many of these sites are old sites agencies used to manage.

Others are reporting they are getting notifications that sites from clients they now control have their old agencies or former employees added as a new verified owner.

UPDATE: the issue now seems resolved (see below)

No More Subscriber Stats, Robots.txt and Site Performance in Webmaster Tools

Ever since Larry Page re-took possession of the CEO position at Google we have seen more products and features being killed than developed at Google.

Under the name of “Spring Cleaning” Google announced another few features to be dismissed, this time in the Google Webmaster Tools. In the next two weeks we will be saying goodbye to features like Subscriber Stats, Robots.txt and Site Performance.

The features are mostly features which are not very much used by experienced SEOs. Setting up a robots.txt is basic 101 for most SEOs and they won’t need Google’s help for that. So taking that down makes sense. (more…)

Restricted Users In Google Webmaster Tools

webmastertools

I think most of us use Google Webmaster Tools to get extra information about websites and to add different kind of sitemaps. For some years now it’s possible to add extra users to a specific website in Webmaster Tools so that they can see the collected data to, edit settings, etc. At first it was a big hazzle to add new uers but since the beginning of March 2010 this is easy to do by just adding somebodies email address. Google Now Warning You of Duplicate Content in Webmastertools

Webmaster-Tools-Messages

Google is working on improving Webmastertools. There seems to be more integration with for example Google Analytics and they are delivering more ‘service’ to website owners by handing them information they didn’t ask for.

Yesterday Google announced the latest improvement in that. They are now warning site owners if Google thinks a page is considered to be duplicate content and therefore not showing up in the search results. (more…)

Manage your site in Yandex with Yandex.Webmaster

Yandex.Webmaster

We already had Google Webmaster Central and Bing Webmaster Tools to manage our sites when it comes to these different search engine. With the growing market share of Yandex in the East of Europe it can also be interesting to look in that direction. But not everyone’s Russian will be as good. Luckily Yandex now launched an English-language Webmaster Tools for Yandex.

The service can be reached at http://webmaster.yandex.com/. The Yandex Webmaster service will provide you with information about your site in relation to Yandex. (more…)

Measure your +1 metrics in WebmasterTools and Analytics

Google-Analytics+

Google + is here, big time. If it will become a success or not, we’ll have to wait and see. But Google doesn’t stop there. It is just the beginning actually.

One of the first things they’ve rolled out after Google+ is the ability for webmasters to track and measure their +1 buttons, both in Analytics as in Webmastertools. Social Engagement has really become the main focus for Google. (more…)

EXCLUSIVE: Raventools to integrate Webmastertools

Raven-tools

There used to be a time you had a tool for everything. These days are behind us. Many of the (search) tools we use are starting to give you the ‘full experience’. Do all the things you have to do around your website in one place. And why not. It is much easier to do everything within one surrounding than to have ten different places where you need to perform ten different tasks.

Sources say that next week Raven Tools will announce that they have made another step in this direction: they are integrating Google Webmaster Tools into their own tool. You can then do many things you can do within GWT also within Raven Tools. (more…)

Google and Privacy sensitive DNS data: spam team doesn’t use it

With the news of the iPhone tracking you whereabouts spreading around the web and now also Google being looked at when it comes to Android Google felt it had to get a video re-launched from just two weeks ago. In this video Matt Cutts answers a question about what Google does with the DNS data they are getting. To be really honest: it is a bit of a bumpy answer with a lot of ‘I think’ and ‘maybe’ in there. He knows one thing for sure: the webspam team doesn’t use it. But that doesn’t mean other teams at Google don’t ;) .

Top-3 Performance Optimizations (you should apply right away!)

gwt-performance

Since Google officially introduced page speed as a ranking factor in 2010 I thought I’d put together some of the things we do when optimizing a website for better performance. As a starting point (besides of actually accessing the site and get a feeling on how fast it really is) I’d usually go with the Google Webmaster Tools > Labs > Site performance tab: (more…)

When a penalty is lifted

With the discussion about JC Penney firing up around blogs and websites in the United States it is interesting to know what Google’s policies are when it comes to penalizing. Not just when a penalty is given, but also when it will be lifted. Google figured that it  should be answering questions about this in their Google Webmaster Help videos. So Matt this week told us how penalties are lifted.
