Google Adjusts +1 button: Now You Can Share on Plus from the Button

Google+1-share

It took a while for Google to create this feature, and some like Alex Moss, even beat Google to it, but finally it is here: the option to share a webpage on Google Plus using the Plus One button. In the video below Timothy Jordan explains how it works.

It is simple. If you click the +1 button you get an extra option: share on Google Circles. If you click that you can add a comment, choose your circle and publish it to your Circles profile. (more…)

Google Gave Us Two More Reasons For Getting Our Meta Description in Order

cut-in-snippets

It is one of those tiny little factors when optimizing your website: the meta description. Is it a ranking factor? Some disagree, but you can definitely say it is worth optimizing, after all, it is somewhat of an advertisement for your website. When people spot your site in the SERPS, your meta description is what makes them click on your link, right?

In my basic seo training sessions I always explain that the meta description is at least useful for the searchers to distinguish what is on your page and why they should pick your page in stead of another. And that you should always explain to people what they can find on that specific page. However, when I ask them to write down in about 150 characters why their website should be ranked number one they mostly write down how important it is for their business. Not thinking like a searcher people!

Getting your meta description in order is important for that final click. To persuade searchers to click your result in stead of the one above or below yours. But recently it has become more important and more difficult with it. A few changes by Google make that it now is REALLY time to take a look at your meta descriptions. Of every page. (more…)

Google+ statistics: Male Student Geeks Dominating (infographic)

google-plus-statistics

There are people who don’t believe that Google Plus is really growing in the speed it is. And if it is growing that fast, it must be with the geek community only. Mindjumpers decided to take research data and really look at who is on Google Plus and what they are doing. Resulting in this infographic. The conclusion? Yes, it is growing, but its still mainly male, students and indeed, geeks, who are dominating Google Plus. (more…)

This week San Francisco is host to one of the bigger SES Events in the year: SES San Francisco. Again many marketers will gather to absorb information from experts in search and social. You can expect something special from us too.

Google Plus Links Now Officially in Google Social Search

shared-on-google-plus-intro

We already noticed in July that there were Google Plus posts (public ones) showing up in the SERPS. Now Google has made it official: the latest update to Google Social Search are Public Google+ Posts. Google announced this on their blog.

You can now see results being accompanied by “NAME shared this on Google+”. So this is not direct content from Google+, but shared links through Google+. (more…)

How to Share on Google+ from any website

G+-buttons-white-on-red

This is a guest post from Alex Moss. He is Co-Founder and Technical Director at 3 Door Digital, and develops WordPress plugins. He found a way to share to Google+ from an external site, similar to the tweet button, and wanted to share it with SoS readers. The post has been updated after the launch of Alex’ plugin.

The Problem

Since Google+ launched, I have been asked a few times about whether there is some WordPress plugin or code to allow people to share a URL to Google+ from outside Google+ itself, in the same way a tweet, like or +1 button behaves. In short, there wasn’t one. I don’t understand why, because as an SEO I’d want to make sure this was available immediately or at least used the +1 button somehow to add functionality to share the +1′d URL within Google+ for all/your circles to see. There is one now however!

Facebook “Posted About” Feature Potential Page Traffic Booster

Facebook-posted about

When I first saw it I was a bit surprised. At first I thought I had set up some kind of alert. But I didn’t. Then I thought it must have been something which was there before, but I just hadn’t noticed it. It wasn’t, it is brand new.

Facebook has released a new feature which I personally feel is a smart move and a nice one, something worth competing with Google Plus. And something which can drive traffic. Facebook now shows you links to a Facebook Page when multiple friends post updates have mentioned that specific page. At the same time we are going to see some changes to the like button. (more…)

The Explosive Growth of Google+

It seems that everyone who’s even remotely interested in search and social media has jumped on the Google+ bandwagon. This has lead to a rather explosive growth of Google’s social network, with the 20 million users mark expected to be hit this weekend:

Google Plus Posts Showing Up in SERPS: now to rank them

Google+posts-in-Google

I’ve said this from the beginning: Google Plus needs the connection with search to succeed. And Bill Slawski already said it: posts and comments will start appearing in the Google Result Pages (SERPS). And they are.

Some posts are now showing up in the SERPS. They are not ‘ranking like crazy’ yet and they are far from perfect and it is not every post, but they are there. Should we start optimizing? (more…)

Google Plus circles you can actually use (infographic)

useful-google-plus-circles-intro

The ultimate big thing in Google Plus for many was… the circles. Many couldn’t believe Facebook hadn’t thought of this (they did, they have groups you can make, just not that obvious). But how useful are they really? This infographic gives you an overview of 21 Google Plus Circles which are actually useful… right? (more…)
