The ‘Google Killer’ might Come From A Different Direction: Shazam?

magic-8-ball-404

The question ‘what will be the Google Killer’ has been asked many many times over the past decade. The answer continues to be the same, there will be no ‘one’ product, which will ‘kill’ Google. If Google gets killed, it will not be by a competitor but by themselves, for either growing too big, not doing what the end-user wants or losing focus for example.

Still, there will be a ‘new Google’ one day. It might not even be a search engine which will be that new kid on the block. And you could even say Facebook or Twitter are examples of ‘new Googles’ already. They haven’t killed Google, but sure are examples of other new initiatives which can be successful and who deliver part of the answers we are all looking for.

When it comes to ‘search’ the ‘new Google’ or the next ‘Google killer’ might come from a different direction than a straight forward search engine. Could it be Siri? Or maybe Bing has something up its sleeve? But it could also be coming from a complete different direction. Shazam for example. (more…)

Past and Future: I’m an old man now, you better listen

personalisation-its-all-about-you

Today I turn 40. Now that is an age on which most men go out and buy that fast motorcycle or the convertible car which makes them feel like they are 21, even though at the age of 21 hardly anyone can afford a car like that. Now this mid life crisis behaviour of course is triggered because a man feels he is about halfway through his life and he is now part of the ‘old’ people. It’s because it is a time of looking back and looking forward. What have I reached and what is there to reach?

I have not bought a motorcycle. I have not bought a car. But of course, I reached the ‘dreadful 40 age’, I have looked back and forward. And I wanted to share (part ;-) ) of that with you, the part which is about what I do: online marketing, search, social, speaking and State of Search of course. Things are changing and we all need to be aware of that and act on it. And remember: I’m an old man now, you better listen to what I have to say. (more…)

The Future of SEO

future-of-seo-panel-a4u

Today I want to walk you through and talk you through some of the interesting conversations that emerged from a panel comprised almost entirely of State of Search bloggers on Monday at a4uexpo in Munich! I joined up with Martijn, Roy, and Kelvin to discuss what the future of SEO may look like and what’s in store over the next few years.

This is not an exhaustive look nor is it necessarily reflective of what the future will look like for SEO because hey, as I’m sure Harold Camping can attest, we can’t predict the future. However, I’m going to do my best to summarise here the different viewpoints from the panel as well as the audience so please feel free to disagree, even I disagree with some of the predictions but we’ve all used our experience to try and figure out what is in the future of our quickly maturing industry. The Rules by Which We Play

zero-sum-game-seo-1

It’s a zero-sum game, this industry of ours. There are winners and there are losers. There can only be one site that ranks highest, and many sites that rank below it.

Though strictly speaking that’s not true any more – due to personalised results and the continued integration of social signals – I think we can all agree that there’s limited space at the top of any given SERP.

Fortunately we have a big playground to work in. Search engines process billions of queries a day, many of which they’ve never seen before. Every query, potentially, serves as an opportunity to reach an audience. (more…)

“You won’t win it with a single website anymore, you just won’t” – Search: where to next panel

How could we miss a session which is on the track “State of Search” and called “Search: where to next?”. We can’t off course, so we sat down to watch this session which has Bing and Yahoo in it doing a presentation and a discussion with the panel.

The panel consists of: Stefan Weitz, Director, Bing, Brett Tabke, CEO, WebmasterWorld.com, Robert Murray, CEO, iProspect, Larry Cornett, VP, Consumer Products, Yahoo! Search. (more…)
