Facebook now second-most popular in UK

facebook-europe

UKOM/Nielsen reports that for the first time ever Facebook surpassed Microsoft to become the second-most popular website in the UK. They grew 7 percent compared to a year earlier to 26.8 million visitors in Britain in May.

With that Microsoft falls back to the number three spot. MSN/WindowsLive/Bing sites combined were still good for 26.2 million visits from Brits. Google is still leading the dance with 33.9 million. Nielsen came to these numbers by looking at their panel of 50.000 people. (more…)

Is Facebook Good for You in the Long Run?

Screen shot 2011-06-16 at 13.03.04

When you hear statistics like ‘1 in 4 divorces are caused by things seen on Facebook’ and on that on average the ‘casual’ Facebook user spends over 200 hours per year on the social networking site, it does make you wonder, is having an account actually good for you in the long run?

This blog post isn’t going to be another list of the pro’s and con’s of having a Facebook account – that’s been done before and would only highlight the features that everybody reading this is probably already aware of. Instead, this post is going to be about some of the less-documented deeper psychological side effects and long-term impacts of heavily using social networks like Facebook. (more…)

Facebook connection ends trial and possibly sends juror to jail

facebook-jail

A remarkable story in Manchester shows that nothing can be done secretly on Social Networks, or more specifically Facebook, anymore. A female juror will probably be going to jail herself instead of the defendant because she friended the defendant on Facebook.

The juror is now charged with contempt which could mean she could go to jail for a maximum of two years. Lord Judge, the Lord Chief Justice, seems to be tempted to make a statement that a line has crossed, not only for the juror at trial, but for every juror out there. (more…)

Where is all the talent going? Facebook gets most

talent-traffic

I always tell people that the generations below us will be the ones actually making big changes to the digital world because they are raised with online always being there, whereas we (or at least people my age ;) ) were raised without the Internet. It makes that you have a different way of thinking all together.

I always thought it would take decades, but the ‘new’ generation however is already here. I am growing older faster than expected maybe, but more important: the current generations already knowledgable in this matter. They have been raised digitally most of their lives. That makes them an interesting target for companies like Google and Facebook. Which means that there is a ‘war’ going on between the big digital companies to attract the best talents out there. This infographic by Top Prospect Data Labs shows us who is winning this war: Facebook gets the most talent so it seems, or at least, they are getting the most people, if they are the biggest talents also we can’t see in this picture. UK most Facebook users in Europe, Monaco biggest penetration

facebook-europe

Europe is a weird continent sometimes. Every country has its own rules and regulations, every country has its own culture and every country has its own way of using the web. Socialbakers did a small research into Facebook users and country population data in Europe. They found that almost everyone in Monaco for example has a Facebook account.

The numbers show that %-wise Monaco has the biggest penetration of Facebook users with no less than 95.47% penetration to population. That is a lot! You have to keep in mind though that the exact number of Facebook users in Monaco is not high. The small country has got 29,200 actual users. Compare that to the UK which has 29,789,040 Facebook users and Moncaco looks like peanuts. (more…)

How Important Are Facebook Likes for Search?

facebook-like

At SMX London 2011 I presented the results from a few experiments I’ve been running over the past few months on the impact of Facebook Likes on search rankings. For those of you who didn’t manage to make it, here is a write-up of the experiments and results that I presented.

Following on from a great talk by Bas Van Den Beld on the changes that Google have made to become more social, I began my presentation by asking the audience whether they thought Facebook likes were an indexation factor – the response was mixed.

Facebook Behind Whisper Campaign Against Google

hand-knife.jpg (215×208)

Earlier this week I reported about a “whisper campaign” which had been set up against Google by PR Company Burson-Marsteller, trying to get media outlets to report about privacy issues around Google’s social circle and Gmail. The whisper campaign backfired at Burson-Marsteller when the story came out on USA Today.

At that time the client which had hired Burson-Marsteller to set up the campaign was unknown. We immediately thought of companies like Microsoft, Apple or Facebook. But Burson-Marsteller was smart enough to mention them too in their e-mails as being companies who were dancing around on thin ice when it comes to privacy matters. Now is revealed, and confirmed, that it was indeed Facebook that had hired Burson-Marsteller. The reason? Google tried to use Facebook data for their search results. (more…)

Retargeting: a blessing or a curse?

google-ads-following

A few days ago Google released a piece of research celebrating the success of AdWords Remarketing, the retargeting functionality of the Google AdWords advertising program. They included some success numbers from different advertisers, showing increases in conversions, cuts in costs-per-conversion and higher click-through-rates at lower costs per click. Other impressive numbers Google released include the reach of 84% of the people on remarketing lists accounting for advertising impressions to over 500 million Internet users worldwide. It’s fair to say retargeting is a blessing according to Google.

However where Google is happy about Remarketing some users are not. A search in Google Realtime for “google ads following me” shows a lot of users complaining about being chased around the web by Adwords ads. It’s a sound a hear a lot around the web. (more…)

This is a guestpost by Dean Cruddace, who is an SEO consultant and managing director of SEO Begin Ltd, a North East UK SEO provider since 2001. We got to talk about Profiles showing up in search results and more based on a recent post here on State of Search. Dean was kind enough to share his thoughts and experiences with us on the matter.

Your social connections to you are a click of a button to follow someone/a business/or a product of interest. It’s a less than a second action. We know why we do it. (more…)

Groupon and Livingsocial get some big time competitors: Google and Facebook

Facebook-deals

It is kind of a miracle that sites like Groupon and Livingsocial have been able to dominate the field of online deals for that long without any interference of the ‘big boys’ out there: Google and Facebook. Now within a short period of time both successful social deal – sites saw the two biggest players on the web enter their markets.

Google last year tried to buy Groupon but failed. Groupon felt is was just too successful to be bought out. So Google then decided to start working on their own offering site and last week Google offers made its beta-appearance. And if that wasn’t enough competition yet Facebook this week decided to launch “Social Deals“. (more…)
