The History of Business Behind Facebook

With Facebook now being a ‘real’ company with stocks and all (even though they aren’t going at the rates intended) it is interesting to look at Facebook and see how the business is set up.

What is the history of the Social Network in a business sense. Who did they work with, where have revenues come from and where is it now.

Facebook has finally implemented some well overdue changes to their ‘Pages’ feature which means that administrators will now be able delegate just that bit more effectively. Facebook IPO: Can It Beat Google?

Last Friday Facebook went ‘public’. Facebook stocks went up and down but did not as well as many would have thought beforehand. Still, Facebook got a lot more money from going public than Google did back in the days. But that probably isn’t that surprising considering the change in time and the more digital focus these days.

Both Google and Facebook make their money through advertising. And that money is what investors are after. So how much chance will investors have when it comes to getting a lot of money out of both? Which one is best to focus on? Wordstream made the below infographic to figure out just that. (more…)

Ray-Ban Hoax on Facebook Shows Even Marketers Fall for Peer Pressure

Peer-Pressure

If something is popular and a lot of people go to a specific place you are certain that that place is going to be the target of those trying to do wrong. A busy shopping street will attract a lot of pick pockets. A busy website will attract hackers and social media sites like Twitter and Facebook will attract spam and hoaxes.

Usually most marketers know when something is a hoax or not and don’t respond to it. Last Friday however we witnessed a hoax attempt on Facebook go viral. The interesting part there was that most of the people who ‘fell for it’ were marketers. A funny side effect here was that they ‘fell’ for what is part of their own strategy: human psychology. Facebook vs Google: What The People Say

online-global-perspective

So who is more popular: Google or Facebook? And are they going to compete not just on Social but also on search? Jeroen wrote a great post about it yesterday. We can think and argue about this for a long time and still wouldn’t get an answer.

But in the end it is the user who decides. And what does the user say? The statistics below show us that if you look world wide, there is only one brand who wins it now. But will that change? What do you think? (more…)

Facebook Might Be Going After Google, And They Could Just Win

facebook-google-target

Facebook is enormous, the biggest player online in terms of page views, total time spent on site and registered users. At this moment 1 in 4 of all page views in the US are on Facebook.com. But with 845 million monthly active users at the end of 2011 the growth in users has to be slowing down.

It’s simply impossible to keep the numbers of active users growing at least 100% every year, like they did from 2004 to 2010. So where’s the growth now for Facebook? Is it just about getting more revenue per user on Facebook? Or are they going to look further than their social network? (more…)

Facebook Slowly Rolling Out Facebook Offers, Watch Out Groupon

Facebook-offers

It seems as if Facebook has started to slowly roll out Facebook offers. It seems as if they are contacting advertising clients who now are the only ones who can use it.

Facebook also published the video below on their YouTube channel explaining what Facebook offers is. Facebook has been testing offers for a while and has had different types of services just like this, but this time the Social giant seems serious. Rolled out like this Facebook Offers could mean a huge competitor for Groupon. (more…)

Jon Stewart Puts Google Project Glass and Instagram In Perspective, So Should We

bubbles-istock-bought-resized

First of all: hat tip for Danny Sullivan for pointing this video out on Marketingland. I could just point you there but I wanted as many people as possible and it is a nice set up for some thoughts on the topics.

First of all the video itself, it is an extract of the Daily Show from Jon Stewart yesterday. He there talks about the announcement by Google of Project Glass last week and the acquisition of Instagram by Facebook. To say the least Stewart is sceptic about both topics. And as we are used from Stewart he brings that with the necessary humor. (more…)

How Google Would Look Like In The ’80s

Google-in-80s

What if Google and other popular sites would exist in the ’70s or ’80s and how would they look and function. After watching the popular BBC Comedy “Look Around You” the Dutch web editor Jo Luijten came up with the idea to think about how Google and Twitter would look like in the eighties.

It resulted in the video’s below, besides Google and Twitter Luijten also made video’s of Angry Birds, Draw Something and there’s a video of how Facebook would look in the ‘90s. In an interview with Wired Luijten told he is now looking at YouTube, I’m curious how that will look like :-) . (more…)

UPDATE: Official: Yahoo To Lay Off 2,000 and Being Sued: A Facebook SetUp?

Yahoo-employee-entrance-Yahoo-About-To-Lay-Off-2000

Update: Yahoo now officially announced it will indeed be laying off 2,000 people.

According to Kara Swisher of AllThingsD, who is usually very well informed, this week could be a week of major changes for Yahoo. One of the older search brands in the industry is supposedly making a lot of changes, starting with about 2,000 lay offs in the next few days.

Is this the end of Yahoo as we know it? Will the company be restructured or will there be a maybe surprising other move, like a sale? At the same time as Yahoo is having its own issues they are being sued as a counter reaction by their partners Facebook over patents. To say that Yahoo is in rough waters in an understatement.

A few years ago Yahoo was the center of attention when both Google and Microsoft tried to buy the former search giant. This ended not with a sale but with a partner deal with Microsoft. This deal was made by the Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz who has always been a source for news, because there was always something going on.

With her departure things seemed to have calmed down, but behind the scenes her CEO successor Scott Thompson is as busy or busier than Bartz restructuring the company. According to AllthingsD this will result in 2,000 lay offs this week. And that is just the start. (more…)

The Difference In Users Between Google+ and Facebook

facebook-gplus-diff-intro

Google’s TV Ad in the UK was launched this weekend. It was clearly aimed at getting more users for Google+. But as someone stated in the comments of our Facebook page, who was it targeted at? Young or old users? And wouldn’t people who see it think “hey that’s Facebook?”. But Facebook and Google+ have different type of users.

For those who don’t know the difference between the users, students from the Fox School of Business made this infographic to explain the difference. (more…)

Who Says Facebook Is Not A Sales Tool? 40% Of Small Businesses Use It That Way

facebook-commerce

Social Media is not regarded as a sales tool. Most people will tell you not to expect too much of it if you want to use Social Media that way. After all, Social Media is a platform which will help gain you visibility, not sales. Right?

You might think that, but as it turns out it could be a very useful sales tool after all. At least, that is what 37% of small businesses say when asked about Facebook sales. They state that Facebook Commerce is their sole sales channel.

The respondents were all customers of social commerce platform provider Payvment, who performed this research last month. They were asked about how they use Facebook and how they liked it. Some results were interesting. (more…)
