Facebook Nearby: Facebook’s Local Search, Opportunity for Offers

Nearby-featured-2

In the past few years many have discussed the possibility of Facebook going into search. After all, the Social giant has got an enormous user base and has the knowledge of who and what you like so it would be interesting to see if they could give you the right ‘answers’ on your searches.

Many have said that Facebook and search would not work, either because search is ‘a whole different ballgame’ or that people don’t go to Facebook to search, but to interact with their friends. On top of that Facebook has a deal with Bing so the ‘need’ to do search isn’t as big.

But like Google changes, so does Facebook and wherever there lies opportunity they will not hesitate to grab opportunity, as long as it is connected to what the ‘business’ does. And so now we see Facebook getting into “search”, but not as a ‘regular’ search engine, but closely related to that what they were already doing: local search, recommended by friends. And with that it is opening up another channel for their Facebook Offers. (more…)

How do British People Use Facebook?

Everybody is different, every country is different, so when “doing” Social Media you have to keep in mind how different countries act. Facebook released this video about how Brits act on Facebook. Our question off course: do you agree? If you are British, do you recognise your own behaviour? And if you are not, do you recognise behaviour of the Brits you know?

Facebook and Yahoo: No, But What If…?

what-if

This weekend suddenly the rumour popped up that Facebook and Yahoo were supposedly talking about creating a search engine, something which also was denied in a later stage. That off course led to a lot of speculation: wass this really true? Would it make sense? What about Bing? And would a combination between Yahoo and Facebook have any chance of succeeding, let alone beating a Google or Bing?

We decided to drop this question on the desks of some industry experts to see how they would feel about this if it were true (which it most probably isn’t). Because we can dream right, dream of a Google competitor. Or not? (more…)

More Women on Facebook, But Men Click More and Are Cheaper

men-mars-and-venus

Targeting, it is almost a science to find the right target audience. And not as easy as it seems as well. I often ask the question ‘who is your target audience’ in talks and training sessions. In general the answer then is ‘male or female between the age of…’. The follow up question then is: ‘what should they be doing’, on which most responses are ‘buying our products’. With that people tend to forget about the extra target audience they have: influencers.

But when you have things narrowed down most companies still target based on group-details, starting with the difference between men and women, after all we all know that men are from Mars and Women are from Venus, so we should treat them differently right?

A new study of Facebook advertising by Resolution Media and Kenshoo Social looks into that difference and some assumption we all make about the differences between men and women are challenged. Like for example that targeting men gets a better response rate and is cheaper. (more…)

Facebook is Testing the Patience, Trust and Loyalty of Users

slippery-floor

Facebook is not in the best place at the moment. After the failed IPO people are watching the Social Media giant with suspicion. And on more than one level. There is the money part and there is the privacy part. And in both these areas Facebook now seems to be testing the patience and loyalty of the users.

The recent launch of Facebook Offers should be giving the network more financial leeway but instead is giving a lot of users annoyance. On top of that Facebook was ‘accused’ of putting private messages on public timelines and at the same time rumours of Facebook working with a controversial data company raise fear of what will happen to privacy matters. Google now has its own Instagram: Snapseed

Snapseed

Didn’t you feel as if Google has been slow when it comes to acquiring other companies lately? Only last year they were acquiring one about once a month, ever since it seems like Google has killed more products than it has built or bought.

Now Google is back on the buying field. And with an acquisition which seems to be directly related to Google’s ‘battle’ with Facebook. Google has acquired Nik Software, makers of several different apps which all have to do with photography. One of the apps being Snapseed, which won the iPad App Of The Year award in 2011. An app which also has 9 million users already. With this Google bought their own Instagram and is speeding up the battle for the social users. (more…)
