ThinkVisibility, Linkworthy Stories and a Link Opportunity to Share

i-won

I was lucky enough to be selected to speak at the recent Think Visibility conference, and did so on behalf of SEO PR Training, a second company that I run in partnership with Claire Thompson. By way of background, at SEO PR Training we put our mutual PR experience to use offering training for SEO professionals seeking to learn more about the media knowledge and skills utilised by PR professionals, that can be turned to our (SEO) advantage to secure high-quality links in online editorial.

If you weren’t at ThinkVisibility and are interested in “How to Find the Angle“, I wrote up my presentation on the SEO PR Training website. In summary we looked at what constitutes “newsworthy” including (amongst other things) stories that have human interest. After my session a webmaster/publisher whom some of you may be familiar with, namely Jason Dale of Loquax competition directory – came to speak to me, as he was in agreement with a particular point I made, and wanted to make me aware of a good link opportunity on that site, which I can share with the community. First, a little context… (more…)

Thinkvisibility and Brighton SEO: Talent Pools, but Without the Scouts

scout

This weekend in Leeds the event “Thinkvisibility” took place. For the UK Search World this is one of the most famous conferences. World wide however it is one of the smaller players. This coming weekend in Brighton there is another similar conference taking place, organized by our very own Kelvin Newman: Brighton SEO.

Thinkvisibility and Brighton SEO are two conferences who have been around for quite a while. Thinkvisibility was already organized for the sixth time. But “Thinkvis” and “Brighton” are not the only ‘small’ conferences being organized at the moment. More and more we are seeing these intimate gatherings of SEOs, search marketers and those starting to learn the profession pop up. At the breakfast table the day after the conference other possibilities for similar events in other regions of the UK were already discussed. It seems like a trend. But it is a good trend, because the smaller conferences are the talent pools where the new search speakers are coming from. (more…)

Expert Roundtables giving ‘that little extra’ to A4U Munich

Expert-Roundtables

I get the question more and more: what do you get out of conferences? For me the answer is always a bit different because of the fact State of Search coverages conferences and my speaking is far from aimed at getting clients, I don’t want clients, I want to speak, write and train. But for many others conferences are there for learning, sharing and networking. If you get one good lead or one good idea out of a conference you have had a good conferences.

A4U Expo has understood this pretty well and decided to act on it by helping attendees to make networking just a bit more easy. Like they did for the first time in London last year they are offering delegates the chance to take part in a selection of discussions, and debates at A4Uexpo Europe. (more…)

Is Live Tweeting & Blogging Ruining Search Marketing Conferences?

tweet-wall

First up I need declare a bunch of caveats, I’ve spoken at loads of search marketing events, I arrange one and have attended absolutely loads of them. So take my following opinion and bias with a pinch of salt…but I’m really starting to wonder whether live blogging and particularly live tweeting is making the digital marketing conference a worse experience.

People not at the conference may really appreciate the play by play coverage but I think the whole phenomenon isn’t helping anyone, especially those who have paid—in many cases—hundreds of pounds to attend. (more…)

SEO Campixx 2011 – Re-Cap & Interview with Marco Janck

campixx

As you all know the search marketing conference season 2011 kicked off – be it in the UK with SES or in the States with SMX West. Also in Germany we got the first one in 2011: The SEO Campixx. Since I spent the last weekend attending the Campixx which took place at a beautiful lake called “Müggelsee” (close to Berlin) I thought it might be nice doing a little re-cap. And as a bonus I also got the chance to sit down with organizer Marco Janck to get his view on this year’s edition.

First of all let’s have a brief look at the conference itself: Campixx took place the third time in a row (once a year) as a two-day event and this time had around 460 attendees. Since the conference content is and was purely German it’s needless to say the crowd also was – more or less – purely German-speaking. If you compare the Campixx to SMX or SES (in Germany) there are some differences I want to point out: (more…)

International Search Summit keeps expanding in cooperation with SMX

ISS-intro

One event which has been growing rapidly is the International Search Summit (ISS). The conference originally started of in London but it has been organized in both London, Berlin and Seattle in the past few years. And the organization keeps on expanding. In 2011 they are now joining forces with SMX to give that little extra touch to the conferences. International search has been very much underrated in the big search events. With the combination between ISS and SMX both will win. ISS will reach the bigger audience and SMX will get that valuable information from the International scene.

The International Search Summit is a conference series dedicated to international and multilingual search marketing and brings together some of the leading search marketing experts from around the globe. Conceived and hosted by multilingual web marketing agency WebCertain, it has been running since 2008 and from 2011 WebCertain is partnering with SMX to run the Summit at SMX events across Europe and North America.

The show will this year be organized in San José, Munich, London, Seattle and New York. (more…)
