Friday Talk: Eric Schmidt at the UK Big Tent

This Friday Talk is not a presentation as such, but a talk on stage with Eric Schmidt. A few weeks ago we witnessed Schmidt discuss Google with students in Amsterdam, now he talks to Channel 4′s Krishnan Guru-Murthy and fields questions from the audience. He addresses topics including the future of the Internet and how mobile is shaping the web.

Eric Schmidt did not buy Facebook Stocks “That Would Not have been Appropriate”

Eric-Schmidt-LeWeb-2011

Last month Eric Schmidt visited the Netherlands. He there took part in a seminar with the Dutch Queen, but was also interviewed for the Dutch TV Show “Nova College Tour”. In this show it is an interview in a room full of students who also got to ask him some questions.

Eric Schmidt was the Schmidt we know: nice, nerdy (he admitted he was a nerd in his first sentence) and very skillful in staying away from difficult questions and difficult answers. (more…)

Friday Talk: Eric Schmidt at Mobile World Congress 2012

Eric-Schmidt-Mobile-World-Congress-2012

This week in Barcelona the biggest technology driven event takes in Europe place in Barcelona. Mobile is what you at the moment could call the leading technology. Google knows that and wants to be in the center of where it all happens so is moving mobile quickly.

That is why Eric Schmidt, who doesn’t do that many actual keynotes, decided it was ok to take the stage in Barcelona. Below you will find the entire talk, which not surprisingly has a lot of “Android” written all over it.

Eric Schmidt: “Google Not Favoring Plus”

Eric-Schmidt-CES-2012-Sullivan-talk

One of the main first responses to Google’s launch of ”Search Plus Your World” yesterday was that Google was favoring themselves over other Social Networks, an accusation which is in the line of many accusations in the past year: is Google favoring themselves in the search results? It never seemed more clear than this time that Google indeed is favoring themselves over others. Even Twitter responded to the launch with a statement which hinted in that direction, but more about that later.

At CES 2012 Danny Sullivan stepped up to Eric Schmidt to confront him with that issue. Schmidt was crystal clear in his comments: he feels Google is not favoring their own product, they would love to add both Facebook and Twitter to this feature, but hey, they don’t want to give Google their data. He clearly points at the ‘others’ in this part. (more…)

Eric Schmidt Confirms: The Social Signal is a Ranking Factor

Eric-Schmidt-LeWeb-2011

Eric Schmidt can always be woken up to make a remark which might just go around the world. So when he took the stage at LeWeb 2011 last week our ears were wide open. And we were not disappointed.

Next to a lot of ‘commercial’ talk from Schmidt there were a few lines which drew the attention. For example he stated:

“The social signal, the people you ‘hang with’ is actually a ranking signal”. (more…)

Friday Talk: Eric Schmidt at Washington Ideas Forum

Whenever Eric Schmidt talks we always keep our ears open, because the former CEO of Google will either say something extremely clever or something extremely controversial. So when he sat down for an interview with Gwen Ifill at the Washington Ideas Forum in Washington, D.C., on October 5, 2011, we kept our ears open. Did we hear or miss something…? Well, you be the judge first, is there something he said which is controversial? Let us know…

Eric Schmidt at Google Hearings: Close to Monopoly, but we’ve not Cooked Anything

Is Google a monopoly? And is Google deliberately pushing down competitors in their own search results? These are the main questions a US Senate subcommittee is trying to get answered in a special Google hearing this week.

With a market share of over 65 percent in the US and close or even over 90 percent in many European countries and with the enormous amount of acquisitions Google is doing these days this is not such a strange question to be asking. The hearing was triggered by complaints from Google competitors like Yelp.

One of the people being heard is Eric Schmidt. Now we all know he likes to throw around some quotes we all find either amusing or interesting. And at the hearing we were not disappointed. Schmidt claimed that Google had learned from mistakes that Microsoft made in the past, he also almost said that Google indeed was a monopoly (isn’t that like close to a confession?) but did not “cook anything” and while he was at it he kind of explained how Google tests algorithm changes. Another Look at Page and Schmidts Quotes

We have talked before about Eric Schmidt and his famous quotes. Some think he was crazy for saying them, others believe that if you listen carefully you can get a lot of information out of them.

The Consumer Watchdog in the US is not a big fan of Google and the way they handle privacy. They ‘hit’ on Google once in a while, like in their latest video below. You might agree or disagree, but one thing is for sure: it is very nicely made.

Eric Schmidt at D9: “Google Will Get Social Data In Alternative Ways”

D9–AllThingsD-schmidt

It is maybe my favorite conference which I have never attended: the D-conferences, organized by All Things Digital. In these conferences Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg interview industry leaders. This results in many great talks where Mossberg and Swisher meanwhile also know how to get some interesting stuff out of them.

At the current D-conference, D9, they interviewed again several ‘big names’. One of them being Eric Schmidt. The former Google CEO sat down and discussed in a very light way his current role at Google, how he is never going to leave there (he even told them Google could probably store his coffin somewhere in the Plex) and about failing social.
