The bloggers who really make this blog deserve some attention and that is what we’re doing this week. This week I highlighted all the bloggers going up to the new year. See what they wrote, look at how their year was and what their expectations are. A digital thank you for their work.

Today is the last female blogger (of which we have way to few) who gets the attention: Annabel Hodges. Annabel joined us with a love letter, which was a stunning post to open with. This talented young lady is very well respected in the UK search market and we are very proud to have her on board!

Towards the end of 2010 I am shining a light on the bloggers of State of Search, the ones who are providing us with great content. I take a look at what they wrote, asked them how their year was and what their expectations for 2011 are. A digital thank you for their work.

Today Barry Adams takes the stand. Barry is the only State of Search blogger I have never met in person. Yet it feels as if we are friends, since we’ve been communicating over the web for a few years now. And Barry is the kind of person who doesn’t let you down. He might have some rough edges sometimes when it comes to opinions, he is a guy who stands for his opinions, even if that means he’ll have to eat is hat when he is wrong. I’ve seen Barry grow from someone eager to become a name in the industry to someone who is a solid and well respected SEO. And I’m proud of that!

It is time now for Peter Young. Somebody who has a very successful personal blog but still wants to blog with us. And that off course is highly appreciated, also because the content he creates his great. His great view on the search market also means we have invited him to our radioshow several times.

It’s the bloggers who really make this blog, they provide the great content after all. Therefore I’d like to pay some attention to the bloggers in these last few days of the year. See what they wrote, look at how their year was and what their expectations are. A digital thank you for their work.

Today it’s “Dutchy” day. We had Evert Veldhuijzen this morning and this afternoon its time for the other one living in Holland: Jeroen van Eck. Jeroen is one of these rough diamants. A highly talented young Dutch SEO who also knows how to listen and improve himself with every post. And he already writes great posts!

Bloggers highlight: Sam Murray (@sammurray)

At the end of the  year I want to give some extra attention to those the bloggers from State of Search, after all, they really make this blog. I want to look at what they wrote, ask how their year was and what their expectations are. A digital thank you for their work.

Today it one of the three bloggers who were here from the very first start: Sam Murray. Sam works with Lisa at Vervesearch and is one of those silent powers. There are SEOs you will see on stage of a conference everywhere you go and there are those who work hard behind the scenes, they don’t need to be on stage. Sam is one of them. And he is knowledgable allright, his posts show that.  (more…)

Bloggers highlight: Nichola Stott (@nicholastott)

2010 is ending and thus I want to talk a little about the bloggers from State of Search since they are the ones providing great content. I want to look at what they wrote, ask how their year was and what their expectations are. A digital thank you for their work.

Today it is time for a very very smart lady: Nichola Stott. I spoke to Nichola for the first time when I interviewed her after she and Sarah Carling had just joined the SEO Chicks. When Nichola came to me with the option of a guestpost the choice was easy: no guestpost, you’re coming to blog with us! And so she did, and in style! I cannot think of one post by Nichola I didn’t like. It was all awesome. And then there were the times we actually met in person, most of the times during conferences. Like the one in Amsterdam where Nichola, and many others, got stuck because of the Icelandic vulcano ash clouds. We had loads of fun, with amongst others Frank Watson and you should ask Nichola how she finally got home.

Bloggers highlight: Louis Venter (@louisventer)

Going up to the new year I decided it was time to give some attention to those who really make this blog: the bloggers. See what they wrote, look at how their year was and what their expectations are. A digital thank you for their work.

Yesterday we highlighted Lisa Myers. Today it is time for another blogger who was there from the start: Louis Venter. One of those people you meet and instantly have a click with. Louis is one of the nicest people I know. Besides that he is also very knowledgeable. He knows his stuff, and that shows in his posts in which he always shines that extra light on the topic. (more…)

UK OFT Judgement Could Have Impact On Linkbuilding

In an interesting development that could have wide-ranging repercussions for UK linkbuilders, the UK’s Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has taken action against a company (Handpicked Media) that paid bloggers to write promotional blog posts, comments, and tweets.

While writing promotional material is not misleading in and of itself, what the OFT did have a problem with was that these posts/comments/tweets did not include a statement that they were paid for. The OFT concluded that this was misleading and against the Consumer Protection Act.

How to find bloggers in your niche to help you out

In my presentations I often have several slides in there which are all about using bloggers to get more visibility in search engines. Bloggers already have rankings, already have webpages which are being well indexed by Google and already have authority. Why not use that authority? The big question however is: how can you find them?

One example I gave in my presentation at A4U was about how Universal Film Studios had used only seven influential bloggers to spread their message about the new Harry Potter Theme Park they were launching. Its a good example of how to build up your brand without actually spreading the message yourself.

Another good example I give more often is the one of Sony. When launching a new LCD Television, they looked for the influential bloggers in their industry and used them to spread the word about the new television even before the TV was actually for sale. They didn’t use the press until the television was actually in the stores. They gave the bloggers previews, send them pictures and videos and had them discussing it. That made that when the TV actually was there Sony dominated the search results. Not just with their own site, because they gained a lot of links out of the use of the bloggers, but also through the bloggers-websites. They were the ‘other’ results on the page. And they were all talking about the Sony TV. Some branding that was. (more…)

A summer interview with… Barry Adams

There are many great search-experts out there. We decided we wanted to give some extra attention to some of them. Therefore we will be interviewing some of these experts. During the entire summer you will be served with short interviews with influential people in the industry. You will be seeing interviews with the likes of Joost de Valk, Marcus Tandler, Chris Sherman, Mike Grehan and Danny Sullivan, and off course our bloggers! Be aware that some interviews will be published in the newsletter!

Today: our very own blogger, Barry Adams. (more…)
