Microsoft files complaint against Google in Europe over YouTube

microsofteu

Microsoft has filed an official complaint against Google with the European watchdogs. Microsoft accuses Google of not allowing competitors, like Bing, to get data from YouTube to rank them in their specific search engines. It also says that Google deliberately is making YouTube videos un-playable on Window Mobile phones and believes Google is discriminating would-be competitors.

Brad Smith, Senior Vice President & General Counsel at Microsoft, explains in a long blogpost why Microsoft is filing. He claims that Google is using a pattern to remain the dominant force in Europe. (more…)

Bing wants to be France’s biggest search engine

bing-arc-de-triomph

We have been waiting for their arrival for a while, but finally the ‘official’ Bing has landed on the mainland in Europe. In France to be exact. And this invasion is supposed to be the upset to a dominance of Bing as the major search engine in France. A huge task for the head of Microsoft France’s Consumer Internet Division, Gregory Salinger.

In an interview with the French newspaper Le Journal du Net Salinger expresses the high ambitions he and Microsoft have in France: they want to be number one. (more…)

Bing vs Google: an eyetracking study: more staring at Google (and organic search beats paid)

Google-vs-Bing-Eyetracking

How I love eyetracking studies. It gives you an insight on what users are actually looking at, if something which is so carefully positioned on a webpage actually works. I also love eyetracking studies which show how people look at search engines. Add in the paid search – organic debate and on top of that a battle between Google and Bing and I’m sold.

A recent eyetracking research performed by User Centric focussed on the differences between the two search engines. It was a follow up research from a study they performed right after the launch of Bing.

The study showed that even though there was not a lot of difference between the two, Google “won” slightly based on time spent looking at the results. Even though you can interpret that in different ways. It also showed that organic search still beats paid search by miles. Where everybody looks at the organic results paid search is being looked over in many of the searches. Only 28% of people searching on Google actually notices the paid results on the right… (more…)

Bing gaining share in the US: success rate much higher than Google

Bing-stairs

We keep on asking for a competitor for Google. And all of our eyes are then focussed at Bing. So far in Europe we feel kind of left behind when it comes to Bing, even though they recently started moving towards European mainland by launching in France.

If we however look at the US as an example of what lies ahead we might see some interesting developments in the future. New numbers from Hitwise tell us that in February Google lost some market share, where Bing is gaining. (more…)

Renewed Google Profiles: waiting for the integration in Universal Search

At SES London I was talking to some very nice people from Microsoft. They asked me: is there a way we can make Bing work in Europe? Well, there are several ones off course, like for starters make it work in Europe! But I also mentioned people search. People search you say? Yes, people search.

The most done searchtype on any search engine is without a doubt the “ego search”, searching for your own name. But that is not what I’m directly talking about. What I mean is people searching for your name. Because that happens a lot too.

What if you could actually manipulate what people would be able to see as the first result on your name? Sort of like an overview page which tells the searchers who you are and where on the web they can find you? I can hear you think: a Google Profile you mean? Yes in a way I mean that, wouldn’t it be great to have that on the top of the results. That’s what I suggested Bing would do, play the ego-card so to speak. (more…)

Bing html 5 is nearby: Bing Instant part of update

BingHTML5

Winrumors reports that Microsoft is getting ready to launch a special HTML5 version of Bing. This new version is part of the new release of Internet Explorer 9.

In the new Bing there will be lots of room for animation, including an animation which is much like Google Instant. Page elements will be automatically transitioned when typing a search query. (more…)

Why Bing will be trailing on Google and why it should hook up with Apple and Facebook

Windows-7-Mobile-Phone

Bing is doing well, at least, in the US it is. The latest numbers by Comscore show us that Bing increased its share of searches by 1.1 percentage points last month and Statcounter noted that Bing had outgrown Yahoo, but was still trailing on Google.

Bing is not sitting still either, with their expansion to France and new additions to their search results like flight auto suggest and more personalized search options with the extension of the like-data in their search results.

So Bing is doing well, I personally also want them doing well, because I believe we could (especially in Europe) use some more competitiveness. Still, I fear that Bing will be trailing on Google for quite a while and might never even ‘catch’ them. Why? The reason lies in the combination of mobile and personal. Let me explain.

Bing takes first steps on the continent: launches in France: Bonjour!

Bing-France

We have been complaining about it, we have been asking Bing’s director Stefan Weitz: when will Bing finally make the step and go onto the European mainland. Now finally we found a small announcement on the official Microsoft Blog: Bing is now live in France.

“It’s a small step for search but a big step for Bing” One would almost be tempted to use these words when it comes to the steps Microsoft is taking with Bing in Europe. We’ve said many times before: Bing in Europe, except for the UK, is nothing more than Live Search with a Bing logo on it. Now with the move to France the first steps are finally taken. (more…)

State of Search radioshow – episode 45: Bing’s Stefan Weitz about copying, Bing in Europe and more

Bing is the second largest search engine in the world. And Google seems to be feeling the heat of the Microsoft search engine, given their fierce reactions to the alleged copying of search results. Last week we had Danny Sullivan discussing this topic on our radioshow. This week it was Bing’s turn to talk on our radioshow.

We were very happy to discuss all sorts of different matters about Bing. We started of with discussing why it is taking Bing so long to get to Europe and moved on to how Bing uses user intent, where even super computer Watson came by. Stefan also talked about Google’s accusations last week of copying results.

The shownotes are below. (more…)

What would you ask Bing’s boss Stefan Weitz?

stefan-weitz

The State of Search Radioshow is becoming more popular every week. And not just with the listeners, also with the guests. They are lining up to be part of the show which airs every Tuesday on Webmasterradio.

Last week the show had Danny Sullivan on as a guest and this week there is another great name we can add to our impressive list of guests: Stefan Weitz of Bing.

Stefan Weitz is the director of Bing. He is the person if you want to know anything about Bing. So we’ll be asking him everything we possibly can about Bing’s strategy, when they will be coming to Europe, their copying skills and the difference between them and their competitors. (more…)
