Bing Webmaster Tools Does That?!?!?!

bing-it-on

We are almost all guilty of doing it, interchanging “Google with “search engines.” We use Google Webmaster Tools, we love Google Analytics. We have a love hate relationship with Google. But then there is Bing. They had a few large advertising campaigns to get more users on their search engine but they aren’t making head way there. Yet.

I believe that the more competition there is, the better for us all. Remember back in the day we had Yahoo, Google, Bing (Live), Ask and so many more search engines? Hell it was Ask that came out with some of the innovations that Google and Bing take credit for today. Integrated search and the three column layout. Ask totally did it first. (more…)

Will Windows 8 change the search engine landscape?

Screen-shot-2012-04-20-at-12.11.27-PM1-600x365

Over the last couple of years we have seen the search engine landscape take a significant turn. Both the major players – Bing and Google – have increasingly turned scaled their mobile/tablet hardware options. Google in particular have been hugely successful with the launch of a number of hugely successful range of tablets using the Google tablet operating systems and the recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

Recently also we have seen Microsoft come to the table with a more serious competitor to the Apple and Android based alternatives – and one which has started to see fruition in the market with Microsoft now providing a serious alternative to Blackberry maker RIM in particular (recent figures – September 2012- suggest market share may be as high as 10.4%. As a sidenote Google dominate with around 62.4%, with iOS coming in at around 14%). (more…)

Bing Keeps Challenging Google and is More Popular Than Ever

pepsi-challenge

Bing seems to be on a small war path with Google. Earlier this week we already highlighted some of its social search strategy, but Bing has a broader challenge: Google. Microsoft has been actively promoting their search engine in different ways, along the way ‘attacking’ Google directly.  And that while Bing is already gaining a little ground on Google in market share in the US last August.

While Comscore numbers show a small increase of Bing shares in the US and a small decline for Google, Bing is actively working on their visibility by doing a ‘Bingiton’, a TV campaign, by changing the name of Microsoft Advertising and by trying to lure away Google Adwords customers. All actions are not just aimed at showing how good Bing is though, they are also very much ‘against’ Google. (more…)

A Peek into Bing’s Social Search Strategy

Bing-quora

If there is one person in the industry who is constantly looking at how search and social are being combined and what signals there are in the industry which indicate further synergy, it’s Eric Enge.

Eric recently had an extensive interview with Google’s Matt Cutts and currently Eric is doing a series of short interviews with Bing’s Director of Search Stefan Weitz. In several short videos he talks to Weitz about different search and social related topics.

In the first two videos (you can see them below) Weitz commented on Social Signals (in a talk from last July), partnerships, Quora and Social Data sets. It gives us an interesting insight into Bing’s Social Search strategy, which is clearly different than the route Google is taking. And it might be a better route as well. (more…)

Search Success Rates are Declining – don’t worry that’s a good thing

elevator-down

Search success rate is a funny old metric. At Experian Hitwise we define a “successful search” as a search which resulted in a click through to a website. This used to be a good measure of how competent search engines were at delivering relevant results to users – the theory being that if a consumer couldn’t find what they were looking for on the SERP they would have to make a further search to access the information they were after.

This was all well and good until search engines started getting smarter and realising that they could start offering information to us first hand. Let’s take a simple example of exchange rates. If I want to find out what the current exchange rate is between the pound and the euro and type “pound euro exchange rate” into Bing I don’t need to click through to a currency conversion website anymore, the search engine gives me the information I need directly.
