Who To Take out to Lunch? The Importance of Knowing the Network

dinner

You can safely say that internet marketing in general is going through an important shift. The rules are being changed, the focus is changing. It seems as if finally marketeers start to understand that they are not just there to spit out messages to as many people as possible, hoping someone will pick it up. They are starting to realise they are working with humans. And Social Media and Search are playing a big role in this shift.

Of course the changes Google (and Bing as well) are currently making to how they work are playing a big role in the mindset of the users. Implementing the authorship markup and connecting social accounts to search results and personalising search as a whole are important elements that make marketers think more personal than they were used to in the past decade.

With this change it becomes more important to know who it actually is you are targeting. Which person is influential in a certain topic and even more important, who is connected to that person. Some online marketing tools act on that as well. Linkdex was the first to implement authorship in their tool. They gave you a nice overview of who writes about what topic, giving you an indication of where your targeting should go. But as Matt Roberts, the brains behind Linkdex, said in Iceland last week: that is just a list. We want to know a lot more. As Roberts puts it: we want to know who to take to lunch. (more…)

Recently there’s been a lot of talk about the SEO and PR industry. The reason? Google’s latest developments – mainly Authorship and its ranking signals. For a change this is not only one for SEOs, this time it also highly impacts other professions such as PRs and journalists.

Frankly put industries that have quite a few similarities as both require high visibility and exposure to increase ROI on their efforts. The foundation of PR is creating compelling content that grasps their target audiences’ attention but in order to grasp their attention any PR has to be armed with the finest relationship building skills with the hope that influential journalists will cover the topic, right?

Journalists on the other hand have to ensure that they are well respected and trusted within the industry to maximise their ROI, therefore visibility and exposure are crucial. So where am I going with this? (more…)

Authorship: What and How and Why is it so Important to Google?

Authorship

Lately we are spotting all kinds of small developments pointing towards more importance for the authorship markup in Google. We’ve recently spotted Google E-mailing Authors about their Authorship Markups, Google showing authorship markup even when it’s not properly implemented and Google bringing back author stats in webmaster tools. Apparently authorship is important to Google. But why? (more…)

Google E-mailing Authors about their Authorship Markups

The Authorship markups from Google have been around for a while now, Here at State of Search the authors have one as well, which means that if posts do well in the rankings you might see the author’s image in front of the result. A nice feature.

Since a couple of days Google seems to be sending out e-mails to those who have implemented or changed their authorship profile, welcoming them to Google Authorship. (more…)

How To Connect Your Google+ Pages and Website

Authority is one of the main aspects on which Google is focussing. And authority comes in different ways. There is the authority of those around you, there is the authorship, which has another big reason for Google: to determine which content belongs where. On top of that Google makes sure you are indeed connected to a Google+ page, which means they are able to much better determine your connections.

And then there is the connection with your Google+ Business Page, which also has ‘authority’ which you can make stand out in the search results. And content you put on your Google+ page also shows up in for example the search results.

Until now getting your content connected to your Google+ (business) page and showing your image in the SERPS was quite a difficult process. Especially if you want content which is on your website to be connected to your Google+ page and showing up connected in the search results.

But now Google has made things easier by creating an easy method of linking your website to your Google+ page. (more…)

It’s All about Authority Building, but how?

authority-building-machine-intro

Earlier this week I posted about Klout, how you should ignore services like that because they don’t give you accurate enough information about specific people. Off course what Klout represents is a trend: we are trying to get a grip on authority. And we are trying to become authorities ourselves, because that might just help us become more important.

So the next question is: how do we build that authority? I actually think that it has much more to do with how knowledgable you are and how hard you work than how visible you are, but ok. This infographic looks at authority building. (more…)
