Facebook Rolls out Sponsored Results Search Ads

Facebook-search-ads

Facebook Search is not the best search engine out there. Still for many it is a starting point when looking for people, pages or apps. That’s why it is an interesting area for advertisers to be in. After some initial tests Facebook is now rolling out sponsored results in the search results.

On the developer blog Facebook has announced the new feature as one of several updates they made this week amongst which an SDK for iOS Update and changes to profile pictures, but this one is the most interesting one. The feature will make that when you start searching for a name you might not see a person first, but a sponsored result. (more…)

Microsoft Advertising Making Job Cuts

mel-carson-job

When you follow Mel Carson around on Facebook and Twitter you will see a lot of happy updates, about his daughter, his life in general. If you have met him in person you’ll know this is what he’s like. Mel has been a well known face in the industry over the past years advocating Microsoft to the community with a big smile on his face, speaking, interviewing and writing.

So when I saw Mel’s post entitled “Sad Face: My Role at Microsoft Advertising Has Been “Eliminated”” on his personal blog show up on Social Media my first thought was it was some sort of joke he was making. But when reading the post it became clear: his job really got ‘eliminated’: Microsoft seems to be pulling the plug on Microsoft Advertising. (more…)

Better Understand Your Ad Traffic, by Google

For many Google advertising is still something they ‘just do’ or if they don’t like it, keep away from. There are how ever many experts who can really make a difference in ads, just take a look at Evert‘s post “How to Keep Control over the New and Improved Exact & Phrase Match in Adwords” recently.

One thing which is hard to understand for some is how to actually look at the traffic you are getting from advertising: how are they different and how can you make best use of them? On the Ad Traffic Quality Resource Center Google tries to help their customers with just that. Last week they launched the video you can see below on that topic.

We are interested to know what you take out of videos like this. Is it useful?

Google’s First Ever UK TV Ad: How Was It For You?

Google+-Tom

In the US it is a more common sight: Google doing a TV ad. In 2011 Google even spent $70m on this kind of brand advertising. In Europe and in this case especially the UK however it is not that common that Google uses this way of getting attention.

This weekend however for the first time in their short history Google launched a TV ad in the UK. The ad was called “‘Google+: Tom” and is a commercial to promote Google+. The ad follows the Tom, an average Joe, through his life and how he shares that life in many stages on Google+. It has Benedict Cumberbatch reading ‘The Seven Ages of Man’ from Shakespeare.

The ad was written by Aidan McLure, Laurent Simon, Beth Bentley and Alex Heisz. It was directed by Simon Ellis of Mad Cow films. You can see it below. (more…)

What Do You Do When You Logout of Facebook? Go Bing, Says Facebook

facebook_ad_bing

It is probably not something many people will do when they are using their own computer, but it might happen a lot when on public computers: logging out of Facebook.

It was calculated that in the US alone, 37 million people logout of Facebook on a daily basis. Monthly that numbers is 105 million users logging out. You can imagine that it would be interesting to ‘get’ those people and direct them to a specific website. This would be the perfect advertising opportunity.

Usually you will see a screen which just shows some Facebook information, there is no ad there. But some users have now seen a new trend: Facebook suggesting you to go to a specific site after you log out. The ‘lucky ones’ in this case are Bing. (more…)

Ads As An SEO Factor: Oh No, Do I Have Too Many Ads?

ads-seo-factor-intro

Editors note: this is Bryant Dunivan’s first official post as State of Search blogger. He did a guest post before but will be on as a regular from now on. Welcome Bryant!

With Google’s recent algorithm change, many webmasters will be wondering how it will affect them in both the short and long term. This update sees webpages being judged based on how easy it is for the searcher to find the content that is highlighted on the search engine results page (SERP).

What is most interesting about this update is that it is estimated to play a role in only 1% of searches. We do know two things about Google’s estimates though: 1) They are sometimes wrong, and 2) What starts small can turn into a big portion of your SEO strategy. (more…)

How Social Media Changed The Ad Game

how-social-media-changed-the-ad-game-infographic-intro

Some believe Social Media has nothing to do with advertising. Others think it will or can replace advertising. After a few years of Social Media rise we can conclude that neither is true. It won’t replace it, but it definitely has its influence on advertising.

This infographic shows how it has affected customers, priorities, spending and tactics and shows us some metrics.

New Google Test: Subscribe to Newsletter From The Paid Search Results

Email-Subscribers-intro

Google is testing a new format for ads, one in which it will become much more easy for advertisers to get people to subscribe to their e-mail lists. Tests show that Google might be putting a “Subscribe to newsletter” option in the paid results.

The tests have been around for a few weeks now and according to several blogs it is being tested by some US email marketing firms like VerticalResponse, Constant Contact and AWeber. (more…)

5 simple-but-effective SEO/Social tactics I’ve seen over the last month..

blindfolded

Happy All-Hallow’s Day State of Searchers! Or All Saints Day for those that prefer. Let’s start this post with a little ‘Did You Know’ fact just to ensure it is educational from top to bottom. So, did you know…

“In Western Christian theology, All Saints Day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven.” (Thank you wikipedia). That sounds pretty special to me, a vision of happiness, perfection and clarity. One can dream eh.  But on that note, how about a little happiness and clarity closer to home? SEO heaven?

Yes that is my rather awkward seguing into the main event, some great examples of simple linkbait or visibility tactics that I’ve seen in the past few weeks. Rather than theorise or show amazing examples/ideas that are nearly impossible for the average company to implement, I thought I’d share some examples of marketing tactics that I’ve been impressed with recently simply because they were so very, well, simple. social-advertising-intro

Bing tests the unthinkable

Bing test het ondenkbare

This is a guestpost by Jeroen Smeekens from E-Difference (original post in Dutch). Opinions expressed in the article are those of the guest author and not necessarily State of Search.

Ads between the organic search results. Have they gone mad at Microsoft? Like Google, Bing runs several different tests each day, showing different types of search engine result pages to its users. Some tests only show tiny changes, and regular users probably won’t even notice them. Others tend to be a lot bigger. But Bing just did the unthinkable and just stuffed its ads between its organic results. Shaking my head Bing, shaking… my… head! (more…)
