Tonight: Joost de Valk, Bas van den Beld and Richard Baxter Talk Microformats

I’m super excited to be discussing Microformats with industry luminaries Joost De Valk and Bas van den Beld on Tuesday 15th June at 8pm in Europe, 7 in the UK, in the US at 2pm on the East Coast and 11am on the West Coast on the State of Search radio show on Webmasterradio.fm.

What are Microformats?

Microformats are an extension to xHTML to allow us to highlight (mark-up) items of data in a web page such as addresses, reviews, locations and even recipes! Think of them as a way of attaching extra meaning to the information published on a web page. Love them or hate them, Microformats are here to stay and the chances are you’re already using them. Rel=”nofollow” is an elemental Microformat, used (as we know) to show a search engine that you don’t editorially vouch for a source of information you’re citing as a link on a webpage. (more…)

State of Search radioshow – episode 13: Mayday for Google and a woman on the highway

In this show Bas and Roy were joined by Nichola Stott, a UK SEO and blogger for both SEO Chicks and State of Search. They discussed the Mayday update which seems to affect mostly low quality sites, Nichola reviewed the tool Influence Finder and the possibility of Bing on the iPhone was discussed.

    State of Search radioshow – episode 9: the local show

    This week the show, which was hosted by Roy in Bas’s holiday week, was all about local. Roy invited Dutch SEOs Arjan Snaterse and Martijn Beijk to discuss local matters.

    Different topics concerning local were discussed: how do you set up your site for local, how does Google Places work, Monetization of Maps and much more.

    State of Search radioshow – episode 8: Conversion, Facebook and Sascon

    Once again a very special show this week. As guest Roy welcomed Sander Tamaëla, SEO consultant at OnetoMarket and conversion specialist. Later in the show Bas joined in, straight from SASCON where he also grabbed a couple of speakers to give their opinions.

    In the first part Roy and Sander discussed conversion optimization. After the first break Bas joined in. The SASCON conference was discussed and the subject turned to Facebook and privacy issues.

    State of Search radioshow – episode 6: E-Bay, Twitter ads, site speed and more

    This week the guest on the show is Dennis Goedegebuure. He is ‘a dutchman in San Jose’, working as SEO at E-Bay. He worked for E-Bay in the Netherlands and made the move to the US four years ago.

    In the first part we discussed the background an SEO needs. A college degree is not necessary for working at an agency, working at a company like E-Bay however you probably will need that degree to grow within the company. Also the discussion goes on about how and if you can teach SEO.

    In the second part Roy and Dennis discussed some E-Bay and Marktplaats issues like the frames issue with Marktplaats and the way a big company works with media and external statements. Also Twitter Ads, sitespeed and more was discussed. One interesting part (in the final part) was the way you adress people you work with in the US compared to Europe.

    State of Search radioshow – episode 5 – SEO Copywriting mythbusting

    The State of Search radioshow this week was one without regular host Roy Huiskes. But instead we got two Dutchmen, David Brinks (who ranks number one on the term SEO copywriting in the Netherlands) with a lot of knowledge of SEO copywriting. Both guys did a session at SES Amsterdam called “SEO copywriting: mythbusting & takeaways”.

    We took the time this show to discuss SEO copywriting and the myths they busted at SES Amsterdam. While talking about this some other topics past by like the fact that Google is enhancing the titles, plus the chatroom came up with a couple of questions.
