When Carol Bartz was fired in a way the “Bold and the Beautiful” writers could have thought of immediately rumors started about Yahoo possibly being up for sale. So far there is no official news around that, but now there are rumors that Yahoo’s partner in crime when it comes to search, Microsoft, might be considering a new attempt to buy Yahoo.
In 2008 Microsoft also tried to buy Yahoo bidding up to an amount of 44.6 billion dollars in a hostile take over attempt. That take over then was prevented and Yahoo and Microsoft found each other in a special search deal with Bing.
Now that Bartz has left all cards are open for Yahoo. Their shares have collapsed and it seems as they are more open than before to be bought. Immediately after Bartz’ departure rumors popped up about possible buyers.
Apple was named, as was Yandex and Jack Ma, chief executive of Chinese internet company Alibaba, actually said who was willing to buy Yahoo.
The Guardian now claims that sources close to Microsoft claim that there are two sides within Microsoft discussing a potential take over:
“According to Reuters there are “two camps” within Microsoft. One group of executives believe buying Yahoo would be a ‘knock-out blow’ to rival AOL, leaving MS-Yahoo as the undisputed leading web portal. Others, though, believe Microsoft should focus on buying companies with more potential for growth.”
So far it seems as if its just rumors. But where there is smoke there is fire. Something is going on. But the question is whether Microsoft would be actually interested in all of Yahoo’s assists. Don’t underestimate the size of Yahoo when it comes to different positions on the web. They might have fallen a lot in search, in other areas they are still very dominant.
