Since Bing is gaining market share in the US and a little in the UK and we are always complaining that we don’t have the ‘right’ Bing here in Europe I figured it was about time to take a closer look at the differences between the two. So I decided to put up my “user” hat and act as a user searching for current events and compare the two. In the coming weeks I will be trying to compare Google to Bing based on searches related to current events. That way I hope to get a real insight into what the real differences are between the two search engines.  Today I made a video about the differences between Google and Bing when it comes to the Royal Wedding which takes place tomorrow in London.

So the wedding is over, we are now several hours after the happy couple said “yes”. What is the score now? Let’s take a quick look at the two search result pages. To be very honest: based on user experience my vote goes to Bing. But you decide:

    Very interesting comparison Bas. I ran the same myself both on UK sites. Interestingly Bing didn’t automatically show Royal Wedding as a search term. However the results at a closer look were both similar in some ways. Both searches resulted in a number 1 listing for their own pages (well Google actually claims 2 spots as you pointed out, one of which is a redirect to the other – slight hint of gateway about this). Also the 2nd result from Google refuses to load in a timely fashion but this may be an excessive server load. The news sites are fairly similar and probably of similar quality with a mix on each site of more obvious and other interesting articles. Overall Google I would say has the better quality results – Bing has managed to throw in a couple of odd ball single pagers which aren’t very useful, but the photos on Bing seem more timely in that they seem to be based around the Swedish royal wedding of last year. Overall I think Google win in the quality of the results, but the more obvious news of Bing is a win for usability. Personally I would say Bing is the winner due to this usability, plus the “official royal wedding” site isn’t that great.
