Thanks for this very interesting round-up on the long tail (or lack thereof) in Google SERP. If find your point about brand and footprint most intriguing because as far as I can tell most established businesses would claim to have some brand recognition at their respective level, be it local, national or international.

Yet if I get this infographic right it would seem to suggest that there is a brand-awarness threshold below which a website is regarded with suspicion not matter the quality of its content especially in high quantity. Considering the effort that Google puts in putting forward local results (e.g. geo-targeting searchers, local results with map markers) I feel the ‘brand’ definition must be somewhat more flexible than this.
