Yes, Google Was Down, Don't Panic, Google is Cleaning

Some excitement on Social Media this morning, something which rarely happens seemed to be happening at the moment: Google seemed to be down for many. It was first noticed when Gmail couldn’t be reached, but it seems more Google products were down, even Google.com.

The ‘glitch’ took only about five minutes, but there immediately were responses on Social Media of people being worried about what was happening with Google. It showed once again how reliant people are on the Google services. The last time Gmail was down was in April when about 400.000 people were out of Gmail for about 2,5 hours. This time it was just a few minutes.

It could be that the outage had to do with the closing of some products by Google today.

No more Google Listen, Video and Google Apps for Teams

Early August Google announced they would be shutting down more services. Ever since Larry Page came back in charge Google has been cleaning up products and today we say goodbye to another set of products:

- Google Video for Business is being migrated to Google Drive
- Google Listen is migrated into Google Reader where you can now subscribe to podcasts in the “Listen Subscriptions” folder
- Google Apss for Teams is being converted as of today into personal Google Accounts, the Google Apps for teams itself is closed down.

It could very well be that the hickup Google had this morning had something to do with the ‘cleaning’ of these products.

So for all the people on social: there is no reason to panic just yet.
