Friday Talk: Inspirational TED Talks for Search Marketers

TED-logo

This post is originally from a year ago, but with the event week in mind we thought it would be a good idea to ‘re-publish’ the post.

There’s been a couple of good posts recently about learning within the field of search engine optimisation, that include resources that can assist those looking to begin or develop their knowledge. It got me thinking about some of my favourite resources for learning and inspiration and I find that time and again, I’m often looking outside of search engine optimisation for a wider perspective. I like to do this because I find that to come up with a search marketing strategy, it helps to keep on top of many different aspects of marketing, technology and creative thinking. Then of course the mechanics of your strategy are informed by your methods of learning and testing within SEO.

In particular I love the TED Talks videos, which are an amazing collection of talks from visionary experts within a number of fields; from Scientists to Astronauts to Movie Directors. Ted is a non-profit organisation which is devoted to what they define as “ideas worth sharing”, the ideas coming from leaders across the fields of Technology, Entertainment and Design (hence TED). I wanted to share some of my favourite talks that I have found personally educational, insightful and most useful in my role as a search marketer. (more…)

How To Promote Your Conference Using YouTube

conference-videos-youtube

It’s ‘Event Week‘ here on State of Search and there’s going to be a tonne of information from our bloggers about how to get the best of a conference/industry meet up/convention over the next few days. A lot of the posts are going to be of benefit to attendees (I for one cannot wait to hear some brilliant tips and suggestions) but I’d like to take this opportunity to show how those that are organising the event can use video to promote it, before, during and after. Give Your YouTube Channel Some Love, Style It!

youtube_logo

I come across a lot of YouTube channels from companies who have made excellent videos but have not given any thought to the way their channel looks to the rest of the world. This is something which is actually quite simple to do and makes a channel looks far more professional than with the default gray background and the ‘John Doe’ picture.

It seems as if companies not always realise that people actually visit their channels via YouTube.com or their videos embedded throughout the web. While some companies take the trouble to upload an profile picture they don’t do anything else, some don’t even have a profile picture (the John Doe one), although the options are limited you can make your own channel look good :-) . How To Salvage A Dormant YouTube Account

Taking over a digital marketing campaign is never without certain niggles – but my absolute all time favourite is trying to collate all of the logins and access to social media and other accounts set up in the past. Even the most coordinated strategy can fall foul of the excitement of signing up to the newest shiny tool on the market using some obscure email, especially a personal one. Which often isn’t that much of a problem until that person leaves the company or can’t remember what email was used or a hundred other reasons that make the whole thing more difficult than it should be. In the past year I’ve been asked to revive or access three YouTube accounts that were attracted views and comments but which the company could not login to. The chance to monetize the video content or respond to both positive and negative comments was being lost along with the chance to use the channel for more effective brand building. There are various ways to tackle the situation, so let’s start with the most optimistic option :-) . (more…)

Hosting Or Posting? What Are The Best Options For Video SEO

youtube

Video content can be a hugely effective method of driving sales and traffic for a brand – but where that traffic goes depends on how the video is hosted, optimised, promoted and shared.  Although video is becoming one of the foremost channels for online marketing, there is still a lot of confusion in terms of how it should be used to the best effect, particularly if the aim of the video is lead generation for the client.

There are, effectively, two ways of hosting a video – on page (self hosted) or off page (posted). You can of course do both, or either, or chop and change the method depending on the audience you want to reach or the impact you want the video to have. Both strategies have their advantages and their disadvantages and a cookie cutter approach isn’t always the best way of utilising video so it pays to know the difference. There are going to be times when you need a bigger audience so posting to a site with a significantly wider (and higher) audience may be the approach that’s taken. There are also videos that are dependent on on-page content so self hosting is the only option that gives you the flexibility and control that is required. Below is an overview of both hosting and posting which should give you a quick and easy guide to both. (more…)

You Can Use Streetview To Travel The World

It is not a type of video I normally post here, but I thought this one was so special it deserves the spot today. We know Google Streetview, we know of all the privacy matters, we know of all the fun you can have with it if you find that odd picture taken. But it can also be used to travel the world. Take a look at this video, if possible make it full screen to get the full experience.

Friday Talks: Nikesh Arora at the Marketing Society Annual Conference

This is already a talk from a few years back, but it is always interesting to listen to Nikesh Arora when he is on stage. Here he talks at the Marketing Society Annual Conference in London in 2008. Especially because it is an ‘old’ talk, it is very interesting to see, because he clearly knew already what was going to happen back then…

Looking at the why of the Semantic Web

The “Semantic Web”, a term much used, but not much understood. Why do we even bother using it in the first place? Because in the end, it does make sence. At least, the ‘why’ behind the Semantic Web makes sense. And maybe we won’t be using the term that much, Semantic Web is coming. Just look at the user intent many search engines are now trying to ‘grab’.

The documentary below (found through Mashable) gives a good insight in the idea behind the Semantic Web. This video was actually made by a student, Kate Ray, who interviewed several people to get an insight in the Semantic Web.

If you were just getting a sandwich for lunch, I’d suggest you start up this video while eating your sandwich!
